directions, what to see, safety, and most important ..food tips Posted: Wed July 16, 2008 02:36 PM UTC
Hi everyone, We are getting ready for our 2nd trip to Scotland...my favorite place to travel to (never been to Glasgow, though)! We will be flying into Prestwick and staying at the Jury's Inn. We will be getting in at 21:00 and we would like to know what is the best way to get to the hotel. Should we be concerned about traveling at dark? Also, we will be there for three days...any recommendations on what to see? We are forty and like the outdoors, not really into the nightlife scene. Lastly, any good/inexpensive recommendations for places to eat? The hotel charges $20.00 per person for breakfast and that is not going to happen. Any grocery stores around there?
Thanks in advance.

Simple way is to take the pedestrian walkway over to Prestwick International railway station. Go to the 2nd set of stairs heading down to the platform (northbound)
Take any train that stops. They practically all go to Glasgow Central station.
Jurys is less than 5 minutes walk from Central station. There are plenty McDonalds or other similar fast food places close by for breakfast if you can stomach that sort of thing. Personally, I would buy fruit smoothies, yoghurt & grain bars from a small grocer's shop - there will be one nearby.
Sightseeing? I would get out of Glasgow. Go to Stirling for a day (Castle/Wallace Monument/Bannockburn)
If you do want to stay in Glasgow, try the Burrell, the People's Palace or the Scottish Football Museum (Proper football - ie soccer) at Hampden
And finally..... If you keep yourself to yourself, tourist Glasgow at night is perfectly safe to walk around. Just walk past anything that worries you (much the same advice as I would give anywhere)

I just stayed at same Jury's last week and the USD20 breakfast was certainly over-priced, there are many restaurants around town and there are several supermarkets near the hotel. Enjoy!

There is a weatherspoons less than a block north of the hotel. We had breakfast there for just a few pounds.

Thanks for all of your help. Great advice with the fruit smoothies and I'm glad there is a Tescos nearby. Any other places for good cheap eats???? We like to eat healthy and avoid fast food places.

Have you been on your trip already? I wished I'd seen this earlier as I live in Prestwick and work in Glasgow, but you've got some good advice from others here already.
