Uruguay Where 's a good placce to hunker down in Uruguay?
Posted: Wed July 16, 2008 01:49 AM UTC
My girlfriend and I want to spend an extended period in the South this winter. We're thinking three months, maybe Jan. to Mar.. Someone suggested Uruguay was a good place and we like the idea because we want to speak a bit of Spanish and, as well, my girlfriend has a kind of family mission to perform in Argentina. The idea is that we might travel a bit but for the most part we would stay put somewhere affordable where I can write and she can relax. Does anyone know of a good location to hunker down where it's not too touristy?

January is high, high season anywhere on the beach in Uruguay. So that said you would need to avoid anywhere close to the beach areas for at least January. Always a bit of amazement with me that "tourists" are seeking places to visit that are not too touristy. Once you get into February and March Cabo Polonio is a nice beach town to check out.

To avoid most tourist you might try the provincial capital of San Jose de Mayo, which might be good since it is fairly close to Colonia for the ferry to Argentina. If you want to be more remote there are a couple of man made lakes to the north of Montevideo, and the towns around there are OK. Paso de Los Toros, and Andresito. There are any number of small towns and cities, just depends on how remote and sedate you can stand.

Hi,

If you really want to relax go the beaches in Rocha: La Pedrera, Aguas Dulces, Cabo Polonio, Valizas, etc.
Those places are very beautiful, quiet and relaxing and not so touristic as Punta del Este. Not many foreigners get there and only a bunch of uruguayan people scaping from the crowd of Mvdeo and Punta del Este. Prices are quite reasonable there.
If you want to stay closer to Montevideo, along the coast of Canelones there are a lot of small resorts that match the same caracteristics than the mentioned before and less than 100 kms. from Mvdeo. (Las Toscas, Parque del Plata, La Floresta, etc. etc.)
Regards,

The previous poster mentioned San Jose. I'd add that close to Colonia there are many small beach towns only known for local people but with fantastic scenery: Artilleros, Blancarena, etc.

Hope it was helpful.
Regards.
