Melbourne Good dinner / bar venues
Posted: Wed July 16, 2008 12:36 AM UTC
Hi, I am taking two Sydney visitors to the theatre on a Saturday matinee. Can anyone suggest a good place to go afterwards - a bar, followed by dinner somewhere. They have suggested somewhere 'cheap and cheerful' but I'd like it to be impressive also. Something with a unique Melbourne quality to it perhaps - a bar that also serves food would be OK. Thanks!

Hey Amy - do you Melbournites use eatability.com.au? Could be a good resource for this person to use.

I'll probably contact ya in a couple of months for bar suggestions, as I'm heading to Melbourne for the Fitness Expo.

Happy travels everybody! Mike

We just came back from Melbourne and if you are looking for somewhere in the CBD then we could recommend Young and Jacksons Pub across from Flinders St Station. We can also recommend Lygon St in Carlton which is lots of fun with sprukers out the front of the many many restaurants all trying to get your business.

Hi, I'm not sure exactly which theatre in Melbourne you're headed to, but a good place to adjourn after that is "The Elephant & Wheelbrrow" pub, just across the Victoria Parliament. I try to spend at least a couple of hours each evening there, whenever I'm in Melbourne myself.

Its set up as a typical English style pub, & what I like is they seve ales like "Old Speckled Hen", "Kilkenny's" & "Ruddles" on tap. Also got nice whiskies, incl. my all-time favourite, "Famous Grouse 12-yr Single Malt" :)

They've also got good pub grub, so no major worries about food, in that sense.

If you want some good restauranst to head to after some nice beers at Elephant & Wheelbarrow, just nearby are restaurants like "Frederici's" & "Il Duca". If you're prepared to walk a litle more, into Bourke Street, at one of the street corners is a 24-hr Greek restaurant called "Stalactites", which serves excellent Greek food.

However, I'm more fond of that place because they made me the best possible rump steak I ever had in my life :)

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more info.

Cheers.

As most of the live theatres are eastern end of the city, how about you impress them with Cafe La at the Sofitel Hotel top end of Collins Street. 35th level and a great view over the city and suburbs, not cheap but you do want to impress. Check out

- and no I'm not a share holder of that hotel - LOL
