Munich gettin hitched in munich!
Posted: Tue July 15, 2008 10:00 PM UTC
hi vt's. we could use your kind help. my girlfriend and i are going to elope! Hooray!! and were going to have a ceremony in Munich.
neither of us are from Germany.
we were looking, to start with, for a few low-to-mid range hotels. we were hoping someone who is really familiar with the area could make a suggestion or two or three. Someplace quiet where we can get it on. but also still close to things so we can have a look see without taking taxis to get there. what else? um, a smaller hotel unless you can convince me otherwise would be best.

thats probably enough but i never listen anyways so here is another thing.

were hoping to head off into the alps for a few nights. any suggestions for nice lil places to stay within say an hour or two of munich?

time wise were talkin end of october.
thanks you so much!

Allow me a dumb question first: has the paperwork already been settled? You do not state your nationality or where you live. If neither of you has a residential address in Germany, things won't be that easy.

A simple, relatively affordable (at the expense of room-size)and very centrally located hotel would be Hotel Royal:

Berchtesgaden. It's three hours from Munich, but it's worth it.
Salzburg. It's Austria, but still ok. *duck* (1.5 hours)

If you insist on the magic word "lil", perhaps Bad Tölz (50 minutes), but as a tourist I wouldn't spend more than one or two days there.

Since you are in twos, you may find the Bavaria-ticket interesting to get to Berchtesgaden or Salzburg:

Sorry can't help with the hotels but just wanted to say congratulations! If you want to get out of Munich for a few days, aside from going to the castles, Garmen-Partenkirchen is really nice. You can rent a car in Munich and explore the smaller towns along the way. Happy Travels!

Munich Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Hauptbahnhof

I agree completely with Donna: if you want to spend some time out of Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is maybe the best possible idea. Very calm city, but with many things to see and do, perfect for a romantic trip and just one hour and a half (by train) to Munich central station.
But I read you post and it seems you're looking for a hotel IN MUNICH. Is it so? Well, I'd suggest you, once in Germany, try always to stay close to the main train station (but in Frankfurt and Berlin, the only two exceptions to this "principle" I know so far). There are tons of hotels close to Munich Hauptbahnhof (main station), and with a 15~20-minute walk you'll get to Marienplatz, the city center. Last time I went to a hotel there, I chose a cheap one that was good for a person, but not for a couple. Since I don't know your economical possibilities, which things you consider important in a hotel etc., try to search at venere or hotel.de; they have lots of options, with updated reviews by guests and maps.

I have been to Garmisch-Partenkirchen lately and was a bit disappointed. There's nothing to see you can't have in Bad Tölz as well, which is a lot closer to Munich. There is only (even) more traffic. While Garmisch may be a good destination if you are into winter sports, October is certainly too early to go skiing.
Only exception is Mount Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. It will cost you an arm and a leg to go up (45 Euro/person), but it is very well worth it, provided it's a sunny day.

Then again, being in Berchtesgaden, you could see the Eagle's Nest, which is great, too.
