I think it would be more reasonable a request to mention some *better* areas in Miami, many of which have been covered in many of our local member pages, ours to start with as well as Pulgaron and others.
ANY city has the capability of being dangerous, anywhere, at any time.
There are less favorable neighborhoods to avoid but, then again, they do not hold anything of particular sightseeing value to a tourist.

Most dangerous place in Miami as far as I'm concerned? Our public roadways during rush hour!!!

I remember walking around in Miami and suddenly the area changed as if a line had been crossed, people just hanging around looking very suspicious! Time to turn round and go back! I am a pretty confident person and take normal precautions but I think you are wise to ask and consider safety.

I think your Hotel will point you in the right direction it is in their best interests to do so.

This site also has some useful info - you will have to scroll about half way down

If you stick to Miami Beach (South Beach), Downtown Miami, and Coral Gables you won't have to worry about anything. It's a difficult question to answer because Miami isn't like New York City where there are defined districts, so it is easier to state the parts of Miami that would appeal to tourists instead.

I agree with the above 2 posters, in particular, USSanfrancisco.
If you stick to the designated tourist areas you *should* be fine...but, even in the Grove, you can walk 1 or 2 blocks and be in trouble.
South Beach, stick to the Lincoln Road area or, Ocean Drive...Kendall/Coral Gables, Coconut Grove are very safe.

In the end, use common sense. We practice safe w/drawl at ATMS, only use in well lit, populated areas.
Do not flash money around. DON'T be a target by exposing your purse, wallet and always be on the look out.
Roads are clearly marked but you should have a well labeled map from your hotel or rental car venue.

Pick pocketing and having your wallet stolen can happen anywhere, anyplace, anytime throuhgout the world.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience at the Holiday Inn express airport.
It is *usually* more to do with blaming carelessness and foolishness on the tourists part.

Being aware, being safe, knowing where your personal belongins are at all times.
Not flashing money, using a money belt instead of a large purse.
Carrying your wallet in your front pocket, not back pocket.
Not being distracted by con men or, decoys wich professional pick pockets usually utilize to avert and distract you.
NEVER utilize ATMS in darkened areas and make sure you hava people you know around you which can act as a look out for possible thieves.
NEVER leave your wallet, purse or oher valuables out in the open of a vehicle.
Smash and grabs are a popular ploy...

Again, this doesn't just happen in Miami, it happens throught the world.
