Have been to Tuscany several times and have been north to south. Anyone familiar with Spoleto. I am thinking of spending a week there and explore lower Umbria and Tuscany- Isx Spoleto a decent city to stay and what is the best hotel. We like nice hotels and have read about San Luca, Cavaliere and Palazzo leti-Which is the best? Thanks for any responses-Gene

Yes, Spoleto is a very nice city to stay in.
I used it too like a base to explore the regione (moved twice,a ctually) and for this reason i decided to stay in an hotel a little out of town. Of course i had a car. So, sorry, i can't help with those hotels.. I don't know them. The one o stayed at is this (see the tip a wrote): http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/4c02d/22b36/3/ Ciao Francesco

I have never stayed in a hotel in Spoleto, but it is a very nice town indeed--I wouldn't call it a city-- in a quietly unassuming way.
If you are a hiker at all, it's worth going round the back of the castle and crossing the amazing medieval bridge (Trust me, it's amazing). At the other end you find signposts guiding you on various hikes through the countryside. Make sure you are not going during the music festival as it becomes very busy and accomodations are booked up far in advance.
