| Gibraltar | Eastern Beach-Food, Toilets Etc Posted: Mon July 14, 2008 03:24 PM UTC
Hi everyone, I am going to be visiting Gib for one day in the next two weeks on a cruise and want to go to the beach, looking at a couple of sites I think Eastern Beach would be the best for us, but I was wondering if we go there are there any restaurants, cafes, loos or shops we can use whilst we are there or should we take some basics with us.... plus would it be easy to get a taxi back to the docks from there?
Thanks very much |

There are toilet facilities at Eastern Beach and showers for 30p, there are no shops around Eastern Beach. The only place you can eat is at Latinos, a beach side sort of restaurant, it is right at the end. There is not a big selection of food, but its ok if you just want to grab a burger or a snack. There are two other shops which sell drinks and snacks (crisps, icecreams etc..). You also get the ice cream van driving through, and a van which sells cakes, you have to be on the lookout for his whistle. To get a taxi you would have to call one, the number is 00350 70027. Have you also had a look at catalan bay? It is a smaller, more crowded beach, but has a much better restaurant. Also at Catalan Bay you loose the sun after 1730 due to the shade from the rock. But the most popular beach is Eastern Beach. The basics to take are sun lotion and beach towels. If you need more info just email me.

Whilst the Eastern Beach is the main sandy beach around Gibraltar it is on the ‘wrong side’ of the Rock in relation to shops activities etc. It’s not far though and just a quick taxi ride from the docks. I’ve stayed at the Caleta Hotel in Catalan Bay and whilst it’s a nice area it is a bit out of the way with not much going on, so take some supplies. I recall a nice seafood restaurant nearby.
Unless you want to sit in the sun all day, something I guess you can do on board, I suggest you have a stroll around the Main Street area, that’s where all the shops are, and maybe take the cable car up to the top of the rock. If there are a few of you then a taxi tour of the Rock including the Siege Tunnels, St. Michaels Cave and the Apes Den is reasonable value. Gibraltar also has an interesting Museum on Main St. For lunch try somewhere on Casemates Square or the Horseshoe pub at the other end of Main St. Enjoy your trip Cheers Clive

Thank you so much for your helpful comments, I am looking forward to it now, have also just noticed that I am on the rock until 11.00 pm so will look forward to a cheap pub crawl before I get back on board too.... all the best Justine
