I think it's always good to check yourself first for what *you* like. What's great for someone else, may not be the most important to you. For instance, I like hot chocolate or red wine, but not a beer hangout.

I would suggest taking a look at the VT pages first for some background info. Also look at this Vienna gallery -one of the best: http://www.molon.de/galleries/Austria/Vienna/

I loved Central Vienna, around the "ring", including a visit to the Sacher cafe, and loved Schobrun ... but for me, for instance, I did not stop to drink a beer, which you might like.

Transportation is also excellent in Vienna - so it's easy to get around - just get a map in the train station or in your hotel.

Hope this helps!

I agree that it is a little difficult to recommend things to do without knowing what your likes and dislikes are, but I assume that anyone who is going to spend two days in Vienna is not going to be looking for a heavy metal concert or a one hundred storey skyscraper. As the previous poster said the area around the Ringstrasse is great to wander. I have heard it said that you should get the tram around the ring twice so that you can look at everything one one side on the first trip and everything on the other side on the return or second trip. Vienna is very walkable and I love just wandering around from one site to another and along the water's edge as well. The Imperial Palace is a great place to wander and if you can get into a performance or a rehearsal at the Spanish Riding School, you will probably be very impresased as I was. Schonbrunn is a little way out of the city but is very easy to get to on the underground and well worth the trip. Then if you just want to have some fun, the Prater is a great place to spend a hour or two. You don't have to go on the rides if you don't want to, but just to sit on a bench and people watch is very relaxing. Vienna is a beautiful city and I must confess, it is my favourite city in mainland Europe.
Oh and by the way, there is a fabulous ice cream shop just down in the direction of the canal from Stephansdom.
Anyone who doesn't enjoy Vienna, should stay home, in my humble opinion. Have a great time.

Maryimelda's suggestions are great, here some add-ons:

-If you are somewhere before/around 30years old try "Gürtelbögen" or the sand beaches at the canal at night.
-If you like wine visit a "Heurigen" - Restaurant in "Grinzing" or "Neustift am Walde"
- For shopping try "Mariahilferstrasse"
- see an old Cafe
- depending on the date of your travel - look for current events at http://www.wien.gv.at/english/

heksli has some great suggestions here especially if you are in the under 30's age group. I particularly like the suggestion to "See an old cafe" and I would highly recommend the Griechenbeisel in Fleischmkt, just down from Stephansdom.
See my tip on my Austria page and if you think you might like to go there, then book a table as soon as you can as the place gets packed every night. It is the oldest restaurant still operating in europe and dates back to the 15th century.

hi The first thing you should do is go to the main tourist sector in the city, beautiful buildings Rathaus ( Town Hall), Karntner Strasse the upmarket restaurant and cafe area,St Stephens Cathedral, the Museum Quarter and the beautiful Kunsthistor Museum. Recommend you visit the Schonbrunn Palace www.schoenbrunn.at and later the Sissi Apartments in the city. You should consider attending an evening concert.

Do not forget to have coffee and cake at Demel

Do some research and check out Vienna pages on VT.

Good Luck,
Mike
