| Sydney | Sydney 3 hours as a tourist, what do you suggest Posted: Mon July 14, 2008 07:12 AM UTC
My very first question as a new member of VT.
On the return of our next cruise we dock in Sydney Harbour and I will have 3 hours before we have to be on our flight. I would love to be a tourist for the day and store my luggage and get to see some sydney sights. Some one mentioned that there are lockers quite near by Darling harbour, wharf 8. Any sugestions about what we could do in that short tiem would be most welcome. Glenda |

3 hrs is really short, i would suggest a walk to the Operahouse and have a coffee in one of the cafe along there..

3 hrs, eh? Not too long, but you can fill it with some good sight seeing no doubt. I hope you find a locker around Wharf 8 - I live right next to the cruise terminal, and I don't know of one to be honest.
I'd normally suggest a harbour cruise, but since you're arriving on one, no need really... How about a nice long walk? From wherever you store your bags at Darling Harbour, do a quick walk around DHarbour and then head through the city up to Hyde Park (stop at the Queen Victoria Building - QVB - beautiful) which is in the heart of the CBD. It's a beautiful park with great tree lined views from the fountain. From there, walk to the Domain where the museum is, and you can do a nice walk around the Harbour and view Boy Charlton Pool. It's a beautiful pool bordering on the water - something to see/stop and have a juice at. From there, keep walking around to Lady Macquarie's Chair, and you'll then get the best views Sydney has to offer of the Opera House/Bridge. Keep strolling into the Botanical Gardens (bring bread and the cockatoos will jump onto your arm and you can feed them) and walk up the steps of the Opera House. Have a glass of wine at Opera Bar (just ask somebody where it is - it's right next to/below the Opera House), then walk through Circular Quay and into The Rocks, and do a quick walk through - it's touristy but something most enjoy. The whole time you'll be close to the water and with Opera House views. I take mates that visit me on this run/walk and it's a good mix of the touristy spots, amazing harbour views, and a quick glimpse of the city/CBD. Just a thought! Enjoy, Mike

Thanks Mike, for your reply. I have pasted this into my things to do in Sydney page that I am going to print and take with us.
I was told (thinking that wharf 8 and central station are near each other but probably are not) "lockers are available at Central Station up the end near the country platforms. big enough to take cases or smaller ones too...not too expensive. Does this sound right to you? I will have my 19 year old daughter with me and I am thinking a walk around Sydney area and a glass of wine at the Opera house sounds just about right so that we can take in the feeling of the harbour, Although she will probably be sick of harbours by the end of it. Luckily we don't arrive in Sydney till the 10th and the Popes visit will be over and the city clear. Thanks ever so much, Glenda

Thanks, I think that is what we will be doing, coffee or wine or similar. And photos at the Opera house.

Looking at what you wrote you have 3 hours between docking and flying - dont forget check in time (minimum 30 minutes before flight) and travel time to Mascot. Seems you really only have time for a quick coffee and a glance at the Opera House.

Hey Gizzi - well, if your cruise docks at Wharf 8, Central Station is on the other side of the city...it's probably a $10 cab ride to get there. You could then jump on the train at Central and get off at Circular Quay or heaps of buses that are heading north stop at Circular Quay.
It's a bit of a pain, but definitely worth a few hours around the Opera House and Botanical Gardens. Hope that helps! Mike

Hi SirGaw,
Thanks for your reply. My 3 hour estimate takes this in to account. We dock at about 6am all going well, then I would say that we would disembark prior to 10am could be 8.30am, then we have a flight at 2.30. So I am thinking tourist time would be approximately 3hours minimum, still going to be the fastest tour time I have ever done. Glenda
