if the water in India isn't safe, then isn't chai and tea dangerous to drink too as they're both made with Indian water?

It really depends where are you drinking it? In shop and restaurants, no problem. There are also a lot on the roadside stall, those i doubt, as it's not safe, just that most foreigners cannot take it..

As pointed earlier , chai is safe everywhere since, it is boiled water, if you are having it in a restaurant then you should not be worrying atall, but if you are adventorous enough and wish to have it at a roadside vendor , you should be carefull about the cup/glass and either keep some disposable styrofoam cups with you or ask for it from the vendors ,This will reduce the possibility of a infection

Tea and Chai one n all are the same and is a synonym of Tea in Hindi Language.

Preparation of Tea (Chai) is same all over the world thereby it contains boiled water and tea leaves etc.......as far as boiled water is there...u need not worry. INFACT anything prepared from Boiled Water is not an issue whether it is food, coffee, tea etc.

The only thing u should keep in mind is the place...in terms of cleanliness only.
