Bali Tee cost of a week in paradise
Posted: Sun July 13, 2008 08:25 PM UTC
Hey all,

Not including hotels and airfare would 750.00 pp Canadian be enough for a weeks holiday? (approx. 6,500,000 rupiah)

I would also like to get an idea of the costs for certain items (in rupiahs if possible):

Raw silk scarf (24"+)

Average cafe meal for 2

Pedicure

Nike running shoes

With a wide variety of costs to work with I should be able to figure out an apporpriate budget.

Many thanks,
M

Hi
To be honest difficult to give you an answer to your questions as prices vary enourously from area to area and from shop to shop.

As a rough guide (and I mean only a rough guide )

Your budget of 750 Candian dollars pp is plenty for spending money, as long as you don't plan on doing expensive restaurants every night.

Silk scarf's anything from 150,000 Rp to 1,000,000 Rp depending on where you go, how good you are at batering and the quality of the product.

Cafe Meals There are so many too difficult to say, and it depends on the cuisine you choose. Eating out in Bali can be really cheap but it can also be expensive. There is a web site you should look at it's called www.balieats.com they give reviews and prices for a lot of restaurants cafe's etc in most of the areas of Bali, its a good site to get an idea of what is around and what the prices/standards are.

Pedicure Again many many places you can get this treatment done, some good some not so good, expect to pay around 40,000 Rp any less and it may be a bit dubious.

Nike Trainers, Well the genuine article runs (pun intended) at about 500,000 - 700,000 Rupiah generally no batering, and available in most large shopping outlets. There are copies around all over the place, which are a lot cheaper, and you can bater, but the quality is dubious.

Other considerations,

Car hire with driver (can take you to some of the more traditional markets, where you can get hand made items at good prces) around 350,000 to 400,000 for a 8 hour day, (including fuel)

Hope you have a great time over here, and just to reiterate $750 canadian per person should be plenty.

I agree with the other reply. But to give you a few costings from my trip about 5 weeks ago might help. Firstly an average price for a meal at a good average Restaurant worked out at $9.50 per person, this was main course and alcahol, some of it consisted of cocktails. No entree or dessert, we could not fit it in. Unless you have very big appetites you should find you only need $20 - $30 for food per day.

For a top quality Sarong in a very modern shop I paid $25 you can pick up sarongs at markets for $3 to $5. As for Silk scarves you won't find the raw silk scarves as easy to find as the light printed kind, which come in lots of designs and colours, you will find these in markets and shops and will pay about 1/4 to 1/3 of the shop price at the markets. My advise is to check out the cost at shops that you like, when you go to the markets see what you can get and if you prefer what you have seen in the shops then go back. I was paying about $5.50 per long silk scarf at the markets at Ubud. I like the light silk as they are perfect for the Sydney winter to dress up an outfit and keep your neck warm, which for Vancouver would be perfect for spring and autumn.

As for a Pedicure expect to pay around $5 - $15 dollars, personally I would never have one on the beach or in what I would call a Hair Saloon, I do say this from years of experience in Bali. Go to a good spa it is still very cheap compared to Sydney or Vancouver and the quality of the service will be superior in most cases.

Enjoy your holiday, Bali is a lovely place.

Plenty! We spent about that in 3 weeks between the 2 of us. (not including accommodation). If you want a cheap holiday then Bali is the place to go, or you can splurge and spend a lot, but it depends what type of holiday you want, if you want to stay in a resort and eat there as well, you'll be paying a lot, but if you want to get out and mingle and see the real Bali you don't have to spend much. And, BE CAREFUL with drivers, they get commission wherever they take you so you have to factor that into the price you pay (never go to a restaurant that your driver wants to recommend), better off driving yourself or doing organised tours (day trips etc).

An average cafe meal would be a meal in a Warung, you can expect to pay 18,000 for a steak, 9,000 for Nasi Goreng, 4000 for a juice, 3000 for a soft drink, 16000 for a large beer.
Easting at restaurants will cost more (the previous poster has given you some idea).
My wife got a pedicure when we were there 2 weeks ago and she paid 60,000, however she said if you combine it with another product, ie a massage you can get a deal.
I bought a pair of Asic Gels, and was really disappointed that they were no cheaper than back home (Australia), but had to buy them as I didn't take any with me cause I thought I could buy them cheap. Unless you want fakes, then you can barter for a very low price.
My wife says Bali is not the place for a raw silk scarfe, you need to try India or KL, Malaysia, Bali is more the cotton sarong type of place.
Cheers

These are all great answers. I appreciate thatthe cost of the items above are estimates. I will try and narrow it down.

I'm thinking 4 days in ubud, 3 in kuta. I will be in resorts that supply all my b'fasts and 2 of my dinners. I will not be eating meat, favoring items similar to Vietnamese Pho. There will be few cabbies and tour drivers as I really just want to morph into a beach bum for my time there.

I'm wondering how much to pack, and what is too little.

3 bikinis, 1 pair of shorts, 4 tank tops, 1 pair of capri's, 1 shawl.
