| Santo Domingo | First Visit - What THE Best retaurant in Santo Domingo & What Do men Wear? Posted: Sun July 13, 2008 06:44 PM UTC
OK, I have this weird fetish. I love to go to 3rd world countries and try out their FINEST restaurant. I've done it all over the world and hardly ever had a bad time or poor food. So what's THE best restaurant in Santo Domingo? Also, this time of year, do men wear jackets to those top restaurants or just slacks and shirts? Are jeans appropriate in most restaurants? Tell me the dish...I can't wait for this trip!! (July 22-26)

I don't think there's such a thing as "the finest" restaurant because we have so many kinds of restaurants that it would be very hard to say that Restaurant X is finer than Restaurant Y even tho X serves Asian and Y serves Italian.
With that said, PorterHouse is highly recommended. That's the best steak house in Santo Domingo (and possibly the country). If you go there, dress up. Name: PorterHouse Location: Av. Abraham Lincoln #918. Cnr Jose Amado Soler. Tel: (809) 542 6000 / 541 6000 I second the suggestion of Debbie's Dominican travel.

To answer the second part of your question, the dress code. In most restaurants jeans are OK if you wear a shirt and maybe a blazer or jacket, but that depends on the restaurant. Places in El Malecón and the Old Town tend to be more relaxed than , say the places on Av. Abraham Lincoln or any of the new(er) malls.

You are going to love DOminican night life and restaurant selection. Of course, wherever you go it will depend on what you want to eat.
There are always new restaurants opening here and there in the city. So, if you want to explore go to Abraham Lincoln Avenue and WInston Churchill Ave. There is a few places to go including Porter House (that somebody said here).. which is very good. There is the same avenue a new restaurant with Dominican food Bistro style called ''CANE". It is excellent! If you want to enjoy a great dinner with sea view and romantic place go to "Boca Marina''near the airport on the way to Juan Dolio. Other places to consider are: Boga Boga Restaurant ( is Spaniard food located in 'Bolivar Avenue". If you feel like dominican food dont miss ''Adrian Tropical'' with several locations around the city. Try to hit the one in the Malecon during the day. The Caribbean sea view will be lovely. As I said, there are plenty of choices to choose from. You are going to love all of them. Just explore what you have and voila! Dominicans like to dress well. You will be great with jeans and short sleeve shirt polo, pinpoint.. or also with longsleeves for better places. I would say if you are going out at night dont wear sneackeres. That's a no no.

Man, how could I forget Adrian Tropical!? That place is excellent and you don't need to dress as finely as with the upscale restaurants.
