Palma de Mallorca A couple of questions
Posted: Sat July 12, 2008 11:30 PM UTC
Hey guys,

Heading off to Mallorca next Monday, will be staying in l'Arenal and just have a few questions.

#1 Is the l'Arenal area safe?

#2 Are there good places to snorkle, with no jet-skis and tonnes of tourists and if so- where are they?

#3 Is a bicycle a viable source of transport around the island?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,
Cycling is big in Mallorca and bikes can be hired everywhere whether you want a basic model for local trips or something more sophisticated for longer more challenging trips. I don't know El Arenal at all but believe it is very built up and 'lively' so should suit you if you want plenty of bars and nightlife. The Tramuntana mountain range is popular with serious cyclists but the usual area for starting off is Pollensa/Puerto Pollensa which is a fairly long way from where you're going. There is a train from Palma to Sa Pobla which you might consider, you might be able to take a bike on the train but I'm not sure.
If you fancy some hiking check out www.mallorcanwalkingtours.puertopollensa.com, they put up a list of organised walks for each month and there might be something down in your area to suit.
There are tons of quiet safe coves where you can swim/snorkle in peace but you'll need to get a map and seek them out for yourself. Mallorca ia a really beautiful island, so I hope you can get out and discover some of it off the beaten track. If you hire a car you could cover a lot distance very easily.
All the best,
AM
