| Bergen | Bergen Questions. Posted: Sat July 12, 2008 02:15 PM UTC
Hello, we will certainly be heading for Bergen on the 13th October because we will be going on to the Hurtigrunten for the round trip on the 14th of October.
After Hurtigrunten we have decided to stay for a couple of days in Bergen and sight see. I wouldnt miss it for anything. I have been waiting to see Bergen for years and I cant wait! Would it be worth it doing the Norway in a Nutshell tour? even though we will have completed the hurtigrunten? How long does Norway in a nutshell take? do we have to arrange accomadation and food? What is the weather like in October? Can anyone recomend a reasonable comfy and not too expensive hotel near to the hurtigrunten ferry terminus? Thankyou |

Not to miss: Peppi's curried shrimp pizza. Close to the market area on the harbor.
We took the hydrofoil from Bergen to Flam and just winged the Norway in a Nutshell tour on our own from there. Tourism is what they do. They will take very good care of you. We took the bus from Gudvangen back to Flam and Flamsbana train to the mainline back to Bergen. http://www.visitflam.com/visartikkel.asp?art=251

I'm afraid October is rather late in the year weather wise (the autumn gales have started). But of course you can get lucky. The nutshell trip is made up of existing public transportation, and has turned into Norway's no. 1 attraction. So yes, I would recommend it! From Bergen it can be done in one day, but some choose to stop under way.
The hurtigruten terminal is close the the centre hotels, and raddisson hotel Norgen is only 15-20 minutes walk, while the raddisson hotel Bryggen is down by the historic harbour. A cheaper hotel would be the Admiral or Orion. Bergen Park hotel is a Pension up towards the University that would fit for those that prefer it more quiet. They all have prices online, and you can find reviews here on VT Have a great trip and greetings from Bergen

Haha I never thought of Peppes Pizza as a must-do =D (It's a chain of pizza restaurants, and I must agree that their pizzas are pretty good - there are several Peppes in central Bergen)
Definitely agree that the Norway in a Nutshell is worth doing - it's an excellent, easy way of seeing some of the best bits of Norway. With Hurtigruten you won't be going into the fjords in the same way you do on the Nutshell, and the Flåm railway is also pretty spectacular. Like daarth said, the Nutshell can be done in a day, or you can spend one or more nights anywhere along the route. (You can book accommodation on the Nutshell website if you wish: www.fjordtours.com ) For weather statistics (and forecasts); see www.yr.no The weather in the north will most likely be very different from the weather in the Bergen area - might well snow in northern Norway in mid October. I wouldn't get a hotel near the Hurtigruten terminus - I'd rather stay right in the city centre.. The Hurtigruten terminus isn't far from the city centre, and a taxi there from any central Bergen hotel won't cost much. Reasonably comfy... Hotel Holberg is quite cheap(ish), the rooms are quite small (but the breakfast is nice!) - review on my Bergen page if you're interested. Welcome to Bergen - have fun here! =D
