Bermuda Cruising to Bermuda
Posted: Fri July 11, 2008 09:42 PM UTC
We are cruising to Bermuda and our ship will be docked for four days in St George. We like to go out on our own and we'll be renting mopeds. I would like to know if there are beach areas we would be allowed to use to swim and snorkel. Our ship offers a shore excursion to Horseshoe Bay, but we would just like to go there on our own. Do you know if this is permitted, if the beach is public or private? Thanks for your help!

There are many public beaches and you can snorkel anywhere as well. Most of the nicer beaches are at the opposite end of the island from St. George, but it's only 20 miles from top to bottom so it won't be a problem to get there and back in a day using mopeds.
You can find a wealth of information 9including interactive maps)at:

First let me say You are going to love Bermuda!
Second; 4 days will not be enough!
Mopeds are good since you can go where you want to go whenever BUT the buses and ferries are excellent in Bermuda. A bus pass allows you to use all buses and ferries for one small payment.
Remember traffic drives on the 'wrong' side of the road if you are from North America and that can take some getting used to especially if you are not familiar with mopeds too.
I suggest you get a 'good' map of Bermuda not just the handouts that you can pick up from tourist info. There is a 'blue' map that should be available in many of the stores right in St George.
If you want to have a look before you go try http://209.240.42.187:1024/home/homeJ.html It is a camera that you can control and it looks down over St George and check it during the week and you will often find 2 cruise ships tied up. Sometime on Monday morning you can catch a ship coming into harbour. Believe the second one comes in on Tuesday morning.
You have to click on 'control' at the top and then you can select preset locations such as 'The Town Cut' which is the narrow passage into St Georges.
Click on the picture and you can move around.
The Airport is visible plus many other sites if you are familiar with Bermuda.
Kings Wharf is at the other end of the Islands and also has cruise ships docked there.
Tobacco Bay beach is within walking distance of the dock and while I do not snorkle understand some like it for that.
Horseshoe Bay is toward the west end and is quite a spectacular beach to stop at. The advantage of bus pass is you can get off at Horseshoe Bay and walk back to the east for quite a distance and the catch a bus from Warwick Long Beach and not have to retrace your steps.
Most beaches are public, at least lots to keep you happy during your visit,
More questions? I will try to answer.
check the sites of those with info on Bermuda, many like mine also have pictures as well as info.
