Hi
I am originally from Cape Breton . Sept is a lovely time to vist . For one day you'll have to choose. Ingonish is a long way for the time you have . I would suggest rentinga car and heading to Baddeck . Which is the start of the Cabot Trail . It is beautiful. It is right on the Bras d'or lake (which is really an inland sea) This was always our favorite Sunday drive , growing up. There are some nice restaurants there and the Alexander Bell Museum as well.
The other option would be going to Louisburg. This is a 17 century town/fortress that has been restored. It is very interesting and the whole area makes for a very nice trip. Take a look at my pages on Nova Scotia for more info.
