| Cyprus | Bus from Limassol to Nicosia/ Nice beaches Posted: Fri July 11, 2008 10:41 AM UTC
Hello travelers!
(1)I was wondering if you could help me with something here. I will be traveling to Cyprus in a week or so, and I will be staying in Limassol. However I was wondering if there is a bus from Limassol to Leftkosia Airport. Or maybe some taxi service? I know this would be much more expensive, but can anyone tell me some prices or suggestions? (2)I would also like to know if you guys know a nice beach that wouldn't be very crowded and pretty clean so that I could go to, in Limassol? I am almost sure locals would be able to help me, but I want to make sure that I know where I am going first of all, so that I don't get confused when I get there. Thanks a lot!!!!Hopefully you can help me with some suggestions. |

Fistly what are you doing at Nicosia airport? It is inoperable and in a UN controlled zone.
2nd: There are no buses from town to town. You need a LINE taxi or Gramin (not correct spelling in English). If you ask a local shop they should help, but dont take a normal cab as they will be expensive. A typical line taxi is a limousine mercedes which collects people from various parts of town and is cheap. 3. Guvenors Beach or Curium Beach are really good just outside Limassol. My fav was Lady's Mile which sadly has closed down but there is a taverna at the start of the stretch which still operates. If you have time Pissouri Beach halfway between Limassol and Paphos is great. Have fun.

There are no buses from the airport (yet - there is one due to be introduced soon). At the moment your only choice is a taxi, which should be around 30-40 Euros to Limassol from Larnaca Airport.
Unfortuntely Cyprus doesn't have too many nice beaches, but when in Limassol you can try Govenor's beach south of the harbour.

Thanks a lot guys! I guess my choice is taxi after all.
And about Governor's beach, is it far away from the center? How would I be able to get there? By bus? or taxi again? It's just I will be staying for two days by myself and I won't have a care to get around, so I wanted to get some tan and swim. And I would be greatful if someone could help me out a little bit:) I heard that there are buses that take you to the Governor's beach? Is that true? Where do you think I can get this type of information?

Yes you can take a bus to Governors Beach. If I remember rightly they leave at 8, 9, 10, from yermasoia and return 3,4,5.
George, how did base your findings on Cyprus' beaches? You said Cyprus doesnt have many nice beaches as compared to where? or is it you don't like the beaches there full stop?

For me a great beach has to have fine sand and be in a beautiful setting.
So where do you find such a beach in Cyprus ? Governor's beach is ok, but the view of the harbour isn't all that great. You have a few semi-sandy beaches around Larnaca, but most of them are either increadibly dirty or full of rocks. The reast are rock-only. The very few nice beaches around Protaras/Agia Napa are overcrowded. Lara Beach (Akamas) has been washed away. The only really good beach on the islands I know of is Golden Brach (Rizokarpaso), but that is a very long drive from both Nicosia and Limassol. If you compare Cyprus with the surrounding countreis (Turkey, Egypt, even Greece), you will find that the quality of beaches are much higher in those countries. Combined with lower prices in those countries, that is the reason why tourism in Cyprus is declining every year.

Saying egypt has better beaches than Cyprus shows you do not know what you are talking about. If you compare like for like the resorts are absolutely awful in egypt and considering the beaches in all the countries you mentioned are greater than the actual landmass of all of Cyprus this small island has done well.

Oh - I know exactly what I am talking about.
Don't get me wrong - Cyprus is a lovely country. It has many aspects which make it a great tourist destination, e.g. beautiful golf courses, the Troodos, Kyrenia/Paphos harbours, personal safety and a low crime rate and friendly people. But Cyprus is not a prime beach destination. Unfortunately many tourists are not looking for culture or diversity, but for the big-sandy-beach-combined-with-cheap-beer holiday. And those can be had at much lower prices combined with much nicer beaches elsewehere in the region. Thus the steady decline of tourism in Cyprus. It is unfortunate in a way, but on the other side (IMO) places like Agia Napa desperately need a reduction in that kind of tourism anyway - so maybe Cyprus will benefit in the long run. As long as we don't plaster the entire island including Akamas with apartment blocks first.... but that is a different issue altogether.
