I am staying in Dortmund in Late August for one day on the way to Berlin for a friends party. My wife and i would like to know if there is a vineyard we could visit whilst we are there. We are staying south east of the centre.

rather unlikely you'll find a vineyard in Dortmund -- the city is situated 200 km north of the northernmost growing areas in Germany (in the Rhine valley). Due to the climate change, maybe the Ruhr valley will see vineyards in a not too distant future, but not yet. Furthermore, Dortmund is a typical "beer city" (albeit of terrible taste).
I'm certain you would be able to find a good wine shop with a great cellar, though. Most wine shops I know are keeping a good selection of bottles for tasting. Don#t know if that would be an alternative.

In case you have a car, this is the absolutely northermost one, just south of Bonn (about 120 km from Dortmund)
