| Leh | Plane Tickets to/from Leh Posted: Fri July 11, 2008 01:28 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be traveling to Leh in mid-August, and my plan was to fly one way and take a bus/jeep the other way (haven't decided which way to fly yet). I'm trying to understand whether I need to buy plane tickets in advance. Ideally, I would like to reach Leh by road and then fly to Delhi when I feel like it, but this would mean getting plane tickets from Leh to Delhi only a few days in advance. Will I have problems getting tickets? How much should I expect to pay? Also, any recommendation as to flying into Leh as opposed to flying out of Leh? Thanks! -Alex |

It would be better to catch a bus/jeep to Leh, because of the altitude. That way you can acclimatize. It is very busy in Ladakh in July, where you have to book flights ahead. I am not sure about August. Perhaps get a ticket (to be on the safe side) and try to change the date if it doesn't suit you. BTW Jet Airways does Leh Delhi. They are very good and their prices are lower now if you book online...

Suggest you to take a jeep or a bus to Leh because your body needs to adjust the high altitude.Otherwise, you need to rest in Leh for atleast 24hrs for the body to get adjusted.
July and Aug are the busy season in Leh due to foreign trekkers and tourits. So better to buy your tickets in advance. Also note that due to load factors and other technical reasons, airlines don't offer all seats for sale. So it is better to reserve in advance.I suppose both AirIndia(Indian airlines) and Jet fly to/from Leh.

Dear Suru,
Thank you very much for your suggestions. The cheapest tickets that I am finding are on Jet Airways for $233 one way for one person. Is that reasonable, or should I be able to find cheaper tickets? Thanks! -Alex

Unfortunatley, the fares on that sector is not cheap due to various technical and commercial reasons. I think there are THREE airlines that operate presently--Deccan,Indian, and Jet and i find the price is around Rs8500(about USdollars 200) for mid Aug for indian passengers.Suggest you be a bit cautious about Deccan as they have the reputaion to cancel the flights.
If this is your first visit to such an altitude place, suggest you to see your yoru doctor and a dentist and carry recomeded medicines for safety's sake. Sure you will enjoy Leh as there are many breadth taking sceneries.!
