Zagreb Region Recommendations of what to see in and around Zagreb
Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 06:29 PM UTC
I will be flying in and out of Zagreb this September. I'm planning on spending some time in Zagreb, flying down to Dubrovnik, and at some point, possibly taking a bus into Slovenia, visiting Lubjiana and Bled. What other locations would you recommend visiting in between those areas, keeping in mind I only have about two weeks. Thanks!

If you get the chance Plitvice National Park is absolutely gorgeous (about 100km south of Zagreb). A chain of lakes separated by waterfalls made of calcified material. The bluest water you could ever see.

Bled is fine but a little touristy, nicer in my opinion is Lake Bohinj, around 50 km NW of Ljubljana.

You really can't go wrong in this part of the world.

Hi,

I would recommend that you spend a day or so in Zagreb. It is a beautiful city, with preserved old town and magnificent parks. Zagreb also has one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirogoj ) which is laid out like a park. There is also Medvednica mountain with protected forest area whose top can be reached from Zagreb city centre in less than an hour using trams and a cable car.

Have a look at following two pages on a summary on what Zagreb has to offer: http://www.croatianvillasforsale.co.uk/croatia-property-travel-blog/2008/05/04/croatia-travel-zagreb-one/
http://www.croatianvillasforsale.co.uk/croatia-property-travel-blog/2008/05/05/croatia-travel-zagreb-two/

On your way back from Dubrovnik you may want to stop on Krka waterfalls which are absolutely beautiful. And as recommended already, Plitvice national park are definetly worth a visit. Another lovely area is Gorski Kotar region (translated: Highlands District), you can find more on this on http://www.gorskikotar.hr (on top left is English language version of the site).

In fact, it all depends if your visiting preferences are culture or nature.

I hope you will have a lovely time in Croatia.

I agree with the previous suggestions of Plitvice Lakes, Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb, and visiting Lake Bohinj as well as Lake Bled.

I'm not sure if you are really asking about places close to Zagreb (as the title suggest), or anywhere between Dubrovnik and Slovenia (which would potentially cover the whole Adriatic coast and all its islands, and maybe all of Slovenia including the caves and mountains). But if you are focusing on the Zagreb region, I also enjoyed the small town of Varazdin, a couple of hours north of the capital. There's nothing wildly exciting there, it's just a really nice Baroque town (with another interesting cemtery), very Central European in atmosphere, quite different from the coastal towns and much less touristy.

But again, I'd say Plitvice is the single biggest attraction within a couple of hours of Zagreb.

Hi We had 13 days in Croatia and Slovennia a couple of years ago. Our time in Zagreb was limited but we walked the upper city, the beautiful church, Parliament etc etc, it looks over the lower city.

Highlights of our trip were the Old Town of Dubrovnik, walk the walls, a visit to the coastal village of Cavtat, take the little ferry from Dubrovnik Old Harbour.

Plitvice Lakes & National Park, a World Heritage park, 16 lakes and 100 waterfalls.

Slovennia is a beautiful country, Bled Castle and the lake , also the capital city Lubjiana is a beautiful place to visit.

With 2 weeks you will see more than what I have mentioned, make sure you visit the islands off Split.

Good Luck,
Mike

We just got back .Bled is beautiful but really touristy...a day is enough to see the lake and the gorge ( which is the best part ) . I would head to Split for anight and take a ferry to one og the islands spendinga couple of nights there...

Zagreb is explained already. About Slovenia- there are approx 8 trains from Zagreb to Ljubljana daily and return ticket is 150kn, ride takes 2.5h. Ljubljana is a pocket-size city and you can do it in 1 day (optimal) or half a day (if you're in a rush)and the best way is to rent a bike when you get there (everyone is riding a bike). There are many daily excursions to Bled (approx 55km from Ljubljana) so take at least day and a half or two days to go there and come back.Around Zagreb, except Plitvice Lakes, a day excursion to Varazdin (80km north of Zagreb; castle Trakoscan is near and well worth seeing ) and Samobor (30km from Zagreb; you just have to try kremsnita, vanilla flavoured cake, mm....).

Very nice is ZADAR, Sibenik and Split, Vodice is a nice tourist place with a big Blue Beach. I can confirm. Worth to see is also Trogir.
Of course Plitvickie Jezera, Krka Falls ara amazing.
national Park in VELEBIT Mountains (I've heard) but Velebit is nice looking at from Pag Penisula side (eg RAZANAC small fisher village is a romantic place to observe VELEBIT and storms over it).
