| New Zealand | icebergs & daycare while glacier climbing /skiing Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 04:11 PM UTC
Hi,
will be travelling in end nov. Can i know if i can see any icebergs floating over water anywhere in the south ? Also, will the mountains still be snow capped ? Realized that the fox glaciers does not allow children under 6 to do the climb. Do you know of anyplace where i can place my 2 children - 2 and 5 years while we do the climb ? Also, is there any ski resort that is still opened in mid nov ? Thanks |

I can answer two of the three questions.
1. You will see floating icebergs on the terminal lakes of several glaciers near Mt. Cook Village. The best one is Tasman Lake with hundreds or even thousands of icebergs. Most times you can also see some few icebergs on Mueller Lake and Hooker Lake which you see when doing the Hooker Valley Walk but they are not far as impressive as Tasman Lake. The latter is only a 15 to 20 min walk from the carpark, the Hooker Valley Walk takes about 2 hours one way. 2. All ski resorts will be closed in November. Most skifields close at the end of September. I have been to Franz Josef and Fox many times and I am rather sure that I would have been aware of childcare if it had been offered. I would contact Glacier Walks directly. Perhaps they can indicate a daycare centre or something like that, for example a kindergarten. And BTW The glacier climbs/hikes are really not suitable for small children.
