Phoenix 1st night accomodation
Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 10:15 PM UTC
Hi VT'ers

I'm hoping to fly into Phoenix early November but the flight is not due in until about 8.45pm so after leaving the UK 16 hours or so earlier and by the time I collect bags etc I won't want to go much further (I'm probably going to be travelling alone this time as well). Are there any hotels on the airport surrounds and will I be able to collect my hire car next morning when I am feeling a little more with it and in daylight?

Alternately can you recommend an easy to find motel I could drive to?

ps heading south next day so prefer to be in that direction.

Quite a few hotels around Sky Harbor Airport, many of which have free airport shuttles. It depends on your price range though.
Upper ($150+): Hilton Garden, Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Courtyard by Marriott in Tempe. I'd push for the Courtyard, only because it's 2 blocks from Downtown Tempe in the mix of things.
Mid ($90-$120 range): Spring Hill Suites/Tempe, Radisson Airport, Hilton Place Airport, Courtyard Airport. Hilton Place is in a nicer area (the area around the airport is pretty bad).
Low ($50-$80 range): La Quinta, Sleep Inn, Fairfield Airport. Fairfield, only because Marriott properties are just generally nicer.
There are others, but that should get you started.

If you end up picking up the car that night, there are several hotels near I-10 off Chandler Boulevard, which is near Loop 202 south and the end of the city's development. There's also the casino hotel (Harrah's) at Wild Horse Pass, which is just a couple of miles past that. After that, nothing until you reach Casa Grande.

I have not stayed at any of these hotels, but your plan is excellent. The branch of the company I work for in the UK strongly discourages us from picking up a car upon arrival!

As far as hotels, I went to Google and searched on "Phoenix Airport Hotels", and halfway down the page I got a nice list. I would just look for something with a free airport shuttle ... but would definitely stay away from Motel 6 ...

We did the same and stayed for our first night in 'Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Airport', which is a couple of miles from the airport.
They offer free pick up from the airport and dropped us off at the rental car center the next morning. (There is a courtesy phone in the arrival hall.)
The rental car center is very close to Highway 10 to the south.

Very satisfied with our stay.

Happy travels

Thank you all, I have now found a reasonable flight (cost and times) direct to Tucson which means I can arrange a transfer to and from the Ranch I am staying at saving on the car hire and making my family a lot more content in the knowledge I'm not going to be driving around the desert on my own! I guess it's a fair trade off aganst losing a little flexibility but if I'm honest the hire car stood idle when we were on the ranch last time - bar 1 day - as we were so content to hang out there. It also means I will gain 2 more days at the Ranch which is even better news.

Thanks again - I may get to use your advice on the next trip...
