Hi guys,
Quick question about money. We know that we can use US dollars over there, and as there is a good exchange rate at the moment against the pound we are thinking of buying some. But we wondered which is the best to use - US dollars or Kenyan shillings? Ta, Sam and Kate |

The Shilling is the official currency of Kenya so to buy items in shops, bars and restaurants or taxis you will need shillings - also for tipping. You can also use credit cards in some bigger outlets. Hotels or safari companies often accept Dollars in payment but watch what exchange rate they apply. I would say its best to pay in local currency.

Hello Sam and Kate. Use Kenyan shillings. You need the coins for tipping. You don't say where you are going in Kenya. You might like to look at my Kenyan Page for the UN security website and for tips on travelling there. I would be most interested to hear about your impressions of the country when you get back.

Hello Nickybirds
I don't doubt the security in the game lodges and parks. No one is allowed in who hasn't paid in advance. The main problem is in Nairobi and on the roads. I must say that thieves know when people are moving in or new to the country and haven't learnt the rules. I would still advise people to check the UN page before departing.

Simple! Carry sterling pounds and change them into Kshs.Security has improved tremendously. That does not mean that you can throw caution to the wind.Know your surroundings whenever you travel to any new places!
