Although there may be some change for the Olympics, I have made two visits in the last 14 months spending 30 days each traveling around China and I have never been stopped at a check point. I have never had to show my passport to a police officer but I usually have to show it when checking into a hostel or hotel, and sometimes when purchasing tickets for buses, planes or trains.

Thanks you all for the Feed back. It is a relief to know that. Being a Middle Eastern man I get allot of hassle in Airports, not to mention the suspicious looks. I just don't want to go through that on the ground every day travelling around Kashgher or Xinjiang. I don't want to deal with police every day.

I have not been to Xinjiang Province, but if my experience is any guide, you will experience curiosity rather than suspicion.
Relax and enjoy it.

We were in Xinjiang Province last October. We didn't see any police check point at all. China is much more open than ten years ago. It took us less than 20 min to get from the airplane to our bus. Most if not all Chinese are very friendly, including the police.

Have a good and FREE time in China.

I was in Xinjiang Province this time last year, and didn't see any police checkpoints other than on roads leading to the borders (Karakorum highway, Torugart Pass etc.) I did see TV reports of increased security in Kashgar when the Olympic torch relay was passing through, though.

If you're Middle-Eastern, then I suspect you're going to look somewhat similar to the locals?

I haven't seen the people from Xinjiang except in pictures. I doubt that I will blind in, but I'll try my best to do so :-)))

I think that central Asian people have a distinct look. It is a mixture of Turkic tribes of central Asia with White people (mainly from Iran and the Middle East). There is a very well documented influx of Arabic tribes to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and their Permanent settlement. Merv in Turkmenistan for a brief period was Capital of the Arabic Abassaide Empire. I doubt that any Arabic tribes settled in Xinjiang Province in any large numbers

There is more checking going on now because of the Olympics. Even in Zhuhai in the south (Guangdong province) you sometimes get asked. As you are going away from beijing I would think you would have less problem than going in to Beijing. If all your documentation is in order it shouldnt be a problem.
You say you are Middle eastern and as long as you dont look at all African you should be OK. They have clamped down heavilly on issuing visa's to Africans during the Olympics/Paralympics.
