Dubai Information on Dress code
Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 12:22 PM UTC
Hi,
Can anyone help with regards to the correct dress code for men during the evening in hotels or Restaurants?

I normally wear a pair of tailored shorts with a short sleeve shirt when
on holiday, is it expected to cover up legs completely when dining out?
If so, does this apply for every meal or can you dress down for lunch and breakfast, any help to save embarrassment will be very much appreciated.

I would wear long pants simply because shorts (regardless of how nice) generally aren't accepted in nice restaurants. If you're in a hotel restaurant I would still wear the short sleve shirt but go for long pants. Casual eating is fine for shorts. Girls can wear skirts (knee length) in nice restaurants.

Hi Michael, welcome to VT.

Wear long trousers. Whether you're on holiday or not, and whether in Dubai or elsewhere, shorts really aren't right for restaurants.

Hello from Dubai :-)

Yes, I agree with the others. Shorts for men are only acceptable at the beaches...

a) nice restaurants don't allow shorts
b) Dubai is still in a Muslim country, and not only women are supposed to cover-up... men in shorts are frowned upon, even in shopping malls.

Amir, this is from The National Newspaper:

"Public beaches in Dubai will soon have large signs warning women against topless bathing and indecent exposure contrary to the cultural values of the UAE.

Dubai Municipality said yesterday the decision followed repeated complaints from residents about nudity, mostly among tourists. Residents had complained that a growing number of women were sunbathing and swimming topless, municipality officials said."

Well, I agree that the "Ladies Day" at the beaches can be very confusing in that way.

I also used to think that it would be alright to at least sunbathe topless... so it's good that they're educating beach-goers of this.

Dubai is growing very fast and the number of tourists coming to Dubai is increasing, however the size of Dubai (and its beaches) always remain the same. More tourists coming here means everbody should be prepared for more surprises!!

Just as in US or Uk or europe,

Breakfast and lunch is casual,
Dinner is formal
