| Rome | Seaside village not too far from Rome Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 10:52 AM UTC
We are thinking about maybe flying to Rome in September, but would like to move on from there. We are hoping to get some recommendations for possibly small(er) seaside villages that have good public transportation facilities, since we will not have a car with us!
Radius - about 1 hour from Rome, so that we might do a daytrip or two to Rome as well while we stay there. Your input is highly appreciated! |

I don't know about villages, but there's a little seaside town Sperlonga about 120 km from Rome. Trains depart from Stazione Termini to Fondi-Sperlonga every hour and the trip takes 1h 11 min. Then you have to take the Fondi-Sperlonga bus which goes 15 minutes after the train has arrived and takes about 20 minutes to the beach. There are beaches on both sides of the town - you can go to free or private beach, both are nice and clean. There's an amazing view from the top of the hill. I did this trip last week, train ticket Termini-Sperlonga-Termini costs 12 euros and a bus ride is 1 euro. I'm gonna write more about Sperlonga on my travel pages soon.

I guess Ostia is the closest and most easily reachable seaside place... only a short train ride from Rome, not too big, close to the Ostia Antica ruins and the beaches are OK. There are other nice places I visited such as Passo Oscuro and Fregene, but I think it's not so easy to find accomodation there and I don't know how well connected to Rome they are transport-wise, as I got there by car. Good luck...

Last year when we had a few days to spare before our flight out of Rome we caught the train from Rome to Fumicino which is on the outskirts of Rome but also very close to the International airport. It's a small but nice little seaside town with a Marina. There is quite a lot of accommodation available, from budget priced to higher. From there you can get a bus to the International airport very cheaply. It was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Rome.
Hope this has been of some assistance to you. Cheers ... Brenda

Hi We were like you and wanted to experience a small Italian town for a few nights, we chose Bracciano which was approx 50 km from Rome, less than an hour on the train. It was on a large lake, exceptional time there, a great experience and totally different to the tourist scene. The food was unbelieveable and a third the price.
Bracciano is where Tom Cruise got married 2 years ago, great castle. Good Luck, Mike
