| Bhutan | Flying solo as a young woman...Bhutan? Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 04:56 AM UTC
Im a young person (which means i dont want to endup with a bunch of retirees) who is volunteering in nepal but thought going to bhutan for a very short tour afterwards would be extremely interesting.
Basically my question is, are there any tours aimed at young people? and what does going solo as a "group" mean? will i be the only one in the tour? If so would that be wierd? Does anyonehave any feedback about going to bhutan alone? or know of any feedback? Lots of help would be great and i would be eternally greatful. Thanks, Alice. |

Hi,
I've met this guy who is the owner of this tour company when he came to Australia (his wife is Aussie). His name is Toby. website: www.bhutantranscend.com and his email is travel@bhutantranscend.com. Phone: +975 2 336128. Nice guy. Please check with him. I personally don't know about Bhutan, except that it's the happiest country in the world. I'm gonna go there one year! :) Regards, Merv

I think Bhutan is quite safe--my parents were there for several weeks and did not report any problems, nor have I ever heard even one comment about the place being dangerous. Considering the OP is coming from Nepal, which has gotten a lot of bad press for civil unrest, Bhutan will be a breath of fresh (safe) air!
As for groups to travel with--you do run the risk of ending up with a bunch of retirees when you do any group tour, but your best bet is to pick one that includes a lot of physical activity (strenuous hiking etc.), involves a little physical discomfort in sleeping arrangements, and is cheap. The difficulty with Bhutan is that it's a very expensive place to travel, as I understand, and most young people can't afford it. That tends to mean that groups are filled up with older people. Still, they're not necessarily elderly. Bhutan is also a challenging place to travel from a physical perspective.

Try companies like intrepid or GAP. Although not aimed at young travellers specifically you are more likely to get younger people on the tour. On the Bhutan trips though I would say the general age would be at least 30+ because of the expense.
Have fun, I'd love to go there!

Bhutan is one of the safest place on earth. Perfectly safe, even if you are a single female. There is a lot of ignorance among people about Bhutan, probably because not much is publicized in the press for Bhutan. The only issue is that you have to visit this place in groups. You cannot visit this place alone, unless you are an Indian or Nepalese.

Hey there- I will be flying into Paro from Kolkatta on October 10th. Am organising a 'solo' itinerary with one of the agencies (obligatory) and there are added costs for single travellers (unfortunate!). For one or two more travellers these surcharges will be waived.
Also don't want to draw the attention of a large outfit, but at the same time don't want to be treated like a royal guest. If you fancy signing up for a more low key group, please get in touch. Should manage to catch some of the Tsechu in Bumthang (or even the final day of Thimpu) but I would also like to get across to the quieter eastern towns of Trashigang and Yangste and exit overland....if the cost is not prohibitive.
