Tallinn Tallinn to Stockholm & Tallinn to Riga.
Posted: Tue July 8, 2008 06:44 PM UTC
Hi folks,

Hope this finds you all well. I'm going to be in Tallinn for the first time in mid-August. Will be arriving from Riga and leaving for Stockholm.

Coming in from Riga - does this have to be by bus or is there a rail connection?

And the ferry to Stockholm - it seems the cheapest way is to take a 4-berth cabin for around €140. There will be two of us, does anyone know if you can book the ferry any cheaper?

You can tell that I'm Scottish eh?

Will be grateful for any help,

Auldharry.

Hello,

I was in Riga and Tallinn two years ago and, at the time, the bus was the fastest way to travel. They're only about 300 kilometers apart, but my recollection is that it took about five hours.

It was possible to complete the journey via local train service, but it would have taken much of the day and was at least as expensive, if not more.

I hope that this helps.

Hi, Americans want to save money too, particularly as the US $ stands in relation to the Euro. Last year after a Russia tour we went by plane to Helsinki; spent five days there which included a day trip via ferry to Tallinn. The next scheduled stop was Stockholm. We took the comfortable, reasonably priced train from Helsinki to Turku; stayed at the Best Western Hotel in the port area. Next morning we walked to our ship (Silja Line) and had a wonderful day-trip to Stockholm. We had booked a low cost day-time cabin to store our luggage and rest up. You may want to considers this alternative.
Have a good trip!

As far as I know, there's only one carrier traveling between Tallinn and Stockholm and that's Tallinksilja. The way that's worked for me is that I've booked my cabin as early as possible and sometimes with an offer (if they happen to have one at the time of my departure/booking). Unfortunately, there are no offers on the Int'l site http://www.tallinksilja.com/en/ :( maybe you could consider flying, if a flight ticket is less expensive than 140€?

Yes, flying is a good idea - Norwegian's prices start from 48 euro in August.

For Riga-Tallinn, the best (and at the moment the only due railway constructions in Estonia) option is bus - there are several departures daily.
