Bremen to Hamburg Posted: Tue July 8, 2008 02:21 PM UTC
How long it takes by train from Bremen to Hamburg?Anyone remembers the price of ticket? We will go to Bremen for three days in the begining of December(so not in hurry yet!),and someone suggested us to visit Hamburg same time.I´m not sure yet, should we do it or not..And is there more Christmas-markets in Hamburg than in Bremen?I believe, that we wouln´t stay for night,if we would go.Our visit is so short, that I´m not sure is it vice to visit both,or should we stay in Bremen..We haven´t been in either of them.
If we go to Hamburg, are the market-places far from trainstation?

Fourty Euros for a round trip (standard fare), travel time is a little more than an hour.

I wouldn't go for the Christmas Markets but for Lake Alster:
Choose the exit next to platform 14 at Hamburg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof).
Cross the street and go along Spitalerst., then Mönckebergst.
When you see the town hall (yes, there's going to be another Christmas Market), turn right. you'll then come to a venetian-styled, colonnaded shopping street, the Alster Arkaden. Turn right again, go down Alster Arkaden to find lake Alster. Turn left into Jungfernstieg and enjoy the view over the lake.
Go down Jungfernstieg, visit Gänsemarkt, or Große Bleichen or both.
Yes, that's all within walking distance if you don't mind walking for 1 or 2 hours.
If you still have some time to spare, maybe visit Speicherstadt, the Storehouse City and / or Landungsbrücken.
And you really should consider leaving from Dammtor Station rather than Hauptbahnhof when you return to Bremen. It's the same fare, but make sure your train leaves from Dammtor. Dammtor Station is beautifully located between the University Quarter, Planten un Blomen Park and lake Alster. Plus, it's easier to get an empty seat. Hauptbahnhof would be the next stop (a mere two minute-ride).

Do take a boat ride on the Alster lake. The typical dialect of the hamburg german language is fascinating and so is the ride.

Thanks for all tips.reason i mentioned christmas markets,is that I love them!We were at Köln two years ago and went to markets there, and i really loved them.I´m not a shopping-person,but I really love everything about christmas-commerscial or not..Maybe it´s because I hate winter,so the one thing I like about it,I ´m allmost fanatic ;)
Even if we all Finns "believe"that real Santa lives here,we don´t have as big Christmas-markets,and they are not as nicely done as in Germany. We only have tables-you have little cottages and so on..In Finland it looks like Christmas couple of days before cristmas, not weeks before as you do!
But we have long time to consider what we will do.We have booked flights and a hotel(it can be cahnged, flights not),but first we will visit Rome soon.
someone just told me today about short trip to Hamburg-I had thought it was much longer..

Re: Bremen to Hamburg Posted: Tue July 8, 2008 10:40 PM UTC
You say "We", so I assume that you are more than one. In this case, despite the high living standard of your country, you might decide to travel on the regional train to Hamburg, which takes 1:20 hours instead of 50 minutes by IC/ICE train. It is an hourly train and the good thing about it is that you can use a group day ticket: Niedersachsen Ticket (valid from 9am on weekdays and from midnight on weekends and holidays, always until 3am on the next morning). This ticket costs 27 euro and can be used by a group of up to five people on regional trains only. There is absolutely no need to buy it in advance. The ticket should bear the name of the person that will always use it, the other travelers are not important. So, a day trip for three people for example will cost 9 euro per person. With this ticket you can use the city transportation of Bremen and Hamburg, and I think you can buy it already on the tram from the airport from a ticket machine inside the vehicle.
As for Christmas markets, I guess that the four-times bigger Hamburg is a better place to go. But the Bremen Christmas market is also quite good.
Hope that helps,
Venelin

Good advice by Venelin. Could have thought of the Niedersachsen Ticket.
Hamburg is certainly bigger, maybe this goes for Christmas Markets, too, but Hamburg does not have a market square that is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
I for one don't fancy Christmas Markets too much, but I firmly think that the smaller ones are often more beautiful.
The only caveat, I think, is that you most certainly won't see snow in Bremen nor in Hamburg. Instead, it will likely be cold, wet and foggy.
I guess the city that is best in combining a high probability of "white Christmas" with a beautiful Christmas Market would be Freiburg im Breisgau, the "Capital of the Black Forest". You could fly into either Euroairport Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg or Frankfurt. A bus serves Basel airport with Freiburg, and a train serves Frankfurt International with Freiburg.

Thanks again. We are travelling with my husband,so we are only two..
Missing of the snow isn´t a big deal for us.We will see snow at Christmas every year.Last two years it has been quite a little snow, but anyway.i don´t even like snow so much. And when we live in southern Finland we´ve been used to that, that lately it has been black before christmas, and we see snow when we leave to the middle of Finland for christmas.
I´m also thinking, that little towns are more beautyful. That´s why I´m not sure that should we go to Hamburg at all. Many people I know has been to Bremen, and told how nice it is.But we have lot of time to decide..
We choosed Bremen, because Ryanair flies there, and we´ve allready gone to other destinations from Tampere.

>I´m not sure yet,should we do it<
By all means, Hamburg is simply great.
>the price of ticket?<
You can utilize the "Bremen, Niedersachsen-Ticket"
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/laender_tickets.shtml
resp., at weekends, the "Schoener Wochenende ticket"
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/swt.shtml

From: HB
To: HH
If you like to use one of the a/m tickets, select as "Means of transport" - "only local transport".
