I'll be going over Phuket 6 days on 7th Aug 2008, and looking to stay around quiet beach with my girlfriend to celebrate her birthday (8th of Aug). From lots of reviews, It's seems either Kata beach or Karon beach suits for both of us pretty much. Wat do you guys think?

Also I would like to know what's your opinion on Sugar Palm Kata Resort, Pictures show their swimming pool and rooms look really nice, anyway pictures can be tricky sometimes :)

I also found a nice with lower budget place - The Beach Boutique House, Kata Beach with very funky decoration, Would like to know anyone stayed there before and how is it like??

Is Sugar Palm Karon Resort, Karon Beach a new hotel or old one? Through the pictures it seems pretty much the same with her sister hotels (I assumes it's the same management with Sugar Palm Kata Resort), yet both of the rates are so big different. Sugar Palm Karon Resort gives very low rates for their rooms, just wondering are they in renovations or too old to charge high rates?

Any romantic places I should go on her birthday? The whole trip would be a surprise to her and really would want it to be special for her. I'm working on medium low budget, So really appreciate your help !! cheers!

Hmm. Am I right in guessing you're Singaporean or Malaysian? (For those readers wondering why I've asked, yes, it does make a difference in terms of beach activities, and ease of food outlets, for example.)

First, you should understand that while Kata and Karon are both lovely beaches, neither place is what I would term as 'quiet'. For a quiet beach you need to get away from the major tourist towns on the island, but then you wouldn't have the towns to walk around in to find places to eat. So it's something of a catch-22.

Sugar Palm is a resort property, while Beach Boutique House is more like a very nice guest house. If it were me looking for a bit of flash for a special occasion, I'd go for Sugar Palm. Both properties are in Kata. Beach Boutique is in a fairly newly developed area towards the north end of the town. Not so much going on there. Sugar Palm is at the southern end of the town, in an area that has lots of restaurants and shopping. Neither place is right on the beach, though Sugar Palm may be a bit closer.
