Hi!
Salvador is a special city, trust it. In only one place you can see history, beaches and try amazing food. Wellcome.

Thanks,
I enjoy Salvador. When I arrived I experienced a big cultural adjustment. The weather is tropical. It rains a lot.The most important advice I could give anyone is to learn portuguese. Most of the residents in Salvador do not speak any english. It will be easier for people to take advange of you when spending money if you do not speak any portuguese. The more portuguese you speak the better. Some times employees at night clubs and other establishments will not give you back your change when you buy things. I have been spending a lot of my time at Barra and Porto da Barra at the beach. Pelourinho has been the highlight of my trip. Walking and partying in the streets listening to music and drum beats. Pelourinho is rich in culture. I having a great time.

Next time, go see my graying-blond dredlocked friend Paulista, who rents chairs at the base of the double staircase at Porto da Barra ------ the guy with the ear-to-ear grin.
Consider your lost change a contribution to the local economy, or part of the gringo tax. The rain will lessen and the ensaios will start very soon. Get off the tourist path a tiny bit..... Go to Itaparica by ferry for a day on the beach there. Take the bus that runs down the orla (seafront)to Itapoa and walk on the beach to the farol (lighthouse)to hang out and even have a moqueca. Go to listen to music at Casa da Mae or hang out on the praca in Rio Vermelho. Walk out the street connecting Pelourinho to the Largo do Santo Antônio to the oratorio Cruz do Pascoal and the bar there. Explore the busy shopping street you pass when you take the bus from Barra to Pelourinho. Where have you ended up staying? Have you started the teaching job yet? Where/which school/organization? Where are you studying Portuguese? (The more you can speak, the more local friends you'll make.) Keep us posted.
