The best coverage is AIS 1-2-Call, or DTAC. You need a passport to buy one. Prices vary depending on promotion but its very cheap.

Truemove is good only if you travel in BKK but for outside BKK ais and dtac are better.

SIM cards can be bought at the airport. There is a DTAC booth outside customs in the arrival area. A SIM card costs 100 Baht, $3. That 100 Baht pays for the card and you get 50 Baht applied to your phone account. The best thing is they install the card and activate it for you! You don't have to read instructions or load long numbers into a phone system you can't understand.
Now that you have the card installed at the airport, you can start making calls immediately. If the taxi driver can't understand where you want to go, call your host or hotel and they will explain it for you. To recharge, go into any 7-11. Buy a recharge card and hand your phone to the girl. She will recharge it for you. It just doesn't get easier. There may be a phone service that is a few micro-cents cheaper, but it just doesn't matter. Why wander the city looking for that super deal when you can get a good deal at the airport and you can get on with your vacation with the phone problem solved.

Last month I bought a DTAC SIM card in a 7/11 for 49 Baht, with 15 Bath credit included. With the SIM card, you get a "Directions for use" written in English; it's quite simple to handle incl. reloading. You just get from time to time messages in Thai from DTAC; which, as I understood, are about promotions etc.
