Prague Rail ticket from Bratislava to Prague
Posted: Sun July 6, 2008 09:39 PM UTC
Hi! I will travel by train from Bratislava to Prague.
Some weeks ago I read a VT deal where it was said that it is possible to travel between the two cities by buying a ticket from Bratislava to the border station (Breclav) and then, aboard, a Czech national ticket from Breclav to Prague. This is apparently cheaper than the normal Bratislava-Prague ticket. I'd like to know if anyone has ever done so.
I'm a bit afraid at the idea of taking a train without a regular ticket because this is illegal in Italy (you are fined 50 euro if you haven't got a ticket), and buying tickets aboard has been very limited for some years already. So, if anyone else had bought this double ticket (Bratislava-Breclav + Breclav-Prague), I wouldn't worry about it.
Thanks,
Michele

Michele,

This is a standard procedure and was done countless times. All you need is to have ca. 500 Czech Crowns with you - very easy to get in Bratislava. The railfare from Bratislava to Breclav is 5.10 Euro. Yes, you will be fined for not having the ticket to Praha. The fine is 30 Czech crowns (ca. 1 Euro). The ticket itself is 289 Crowns - so the total will be 319 Crowns plus 5.10 Euro.

The saving is not really terrific tough: the official price is 19.80 Euro all the way between Bratislava and Praha. If you feel uncomfortable - just spend few Euro more. But you will still need some Crowns in Praha immediately.

Thanks for the explanation. I see the standard ticket would cost only 1-2 euro more than this "double ticket" solution, so I think I'll buy the former.
Do you recommend I'd get some Czech crowns in Bratislava? Cannot I get them from an ATM at the Prague station?

I wasn't in Praha since a while but there are disturbing reports of it being a major tourist trap with all, what belongs to it (including overcharging ATM-s and so on). Since you will have some excess Slovak Crowns - why not buy Czech Crowns to get rid of them in Slovakia? That will probably keep your head over the water until you find a decent ATM in Praha. There could be some at the station, but I just do not know. There are some reports of funny ATM-s and currency exchange booth in Praha, so be careful and ask in advance.

Hi We travelled Vienna to Prague vis Bratislava, a nice train trip of just over 4 hours, Vienna / Bratislava section was 1 hour. Fare was cheap, I would not bother with the hastle of double ticket, just get there.

Good Luck,
Mike
