I hope to get back to Lisbon next year. The last time I was there was in 1964 and I was visiting with my sister and my one year old niece. We took the train from Madrid and arrived in the morning of 20 July. If you eliminate the some of the shopping, this could be done in two days.

This is what I wrote at the time:

Monday, 20 July

We took a very swanky city tour, which was a two-decker bus and had headphones with commentary simultaneously in seven languages. We visited the tower of Belem and the Jeronimos Monastery (sp?) too.

Tuesday, 21 July

In addition to shopping, today I went down to the fish market (early in the morning) and took a whole roll of pictures.

Wednesday, July 22, 1964

Yesterday we tried to rent a car, but they were all taken so we got a taxi for 340$ escudos for the day (about $12.00) A car with a driver would have cost another $8.00 anyway plus a tip. This way we could both look and take pictures.

We went to Queluz (which is a little Versailles and my sister said reminded her of a grandmother's house) Sintra -- 2 castles to tour and the ruins of a Moorish ??, the monastery lined in cork, the Peniona chapel (where you can see 20 miles along the coast in each direction), the lighthouse which is the westernmost point of Europe, Calehair and Estoicil. It was a beautiful day -- cool and windy. We also ate in a Fado restaurant where my sister had squid and we saw a very good floor show. The rest of the time we have been shopping for things and eating in our hotel room.

Thursday - my sister did more shopping, and then we took the train back to Madrid.

In addition with the above mentioned things, do not miss a ride on the electric bus n° 28. It's good to do it at the beginning of your stay so you can have ideas of the distances and of the things you don't want miss. For further suggestions pls check my Lisbon home page or contact me again.

in Lisbon you can visit in 2 days:
- Chiado, Bairro Alto, Alfama, Mouraria, Castelo de São Jorge, Baixa-Chiado, Praça do Comércio, Rua Augusta, Rossio (in one day you can see all these areas).
- Belém (half a day) from there you can catch the train in Belém and go to Cascais (about 15minutes) a nice village near the coast and the beach..Besides the train runs near the river and its a nice trip.
- Parque das Nações (a new area in Lisbon)
- Sintra (one day its ok cause its a nice charming Village).
