| New York City | First time in USA Posted: Sun July 6, 2008 03:41 PM UTC
It's my first time when I am going to visit America - New York (in December). Could you give me an idea how much money do I need to take with me for a week to see all the main places of interest, nice non-expensive restaurants and a bit of shopping?
Thanks Inga |

I am sure NYC is cheaper than UK for a lot of things :)
Bring a credit card and ATM card just in case. We have plenty of banks like HSBC here. Very convenient. Shopping you have to go to the famous Century 21 Discount Store in downtown Manhattan. Beauty supplies? check my tip here : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/800c6/cd624/c/

For places of interest I would purchase The New York Pass. The New York Pass entitles you to visit over 40 attractions for $132 at £60 on special offer RRP $165, other deals on offer also, above with New York Pass & Hop-on Hop-off Bus Package
http://www.newyorkpass.com There is plenty of discount shopping in and around Manhattan http://gonyc.about.com/od/shopping/Shopping_in_New_York_City.htm There are plenty of out-of town discount shopping centres, inc Woodbury Common Outlets, NY (Save upto 65% on UK designer prices) http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=7 You pay no sales tax in New Jersey, try http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=54 There plenty of inexpensive eateries http://newyork.citysearch.com/roundup/38630 I would budget for £1000 at todays rate $1850 Airport Transfers JFK, ERW (RTN) Taxi shared or single $100 Bus per pax $27 (24 hr) http://www.nyairportservice.com Good Luck!

Everything here will cost about the same amount as in the UK, only currently your pound will buy two dollars!
As for shopping, if you bring your passport to the customer service counter at both Macy's and Bloommingdale's, you'll get an additional 11% discount. If you really want bargains, come in January.

Welcome and I hope your trip is around Christmas time. Most hotels in NY are expensive, $200+ per night . The rest of your stay is basically up to you. Dress warm and have the most fun seeing some of the touristy attractions such as the Rockefeller Christmas tree, 5th Avenue Lights and store front displays, the chaos of Times Square, midnight mass at St Patrick's, or a rendition of Handel's Messiah at St Thomas - all of them free. Grab inexpensive bites at many a place throughout NY from the row of Indian restaurants on east 6th street in the village to any of the Chinese food places in China Town. If you can, allow yourself one night of fine dining - avoid any restaurants in Times Square. Other expenses can include entrance fees to the well known museums and a few dollars for a metro card. The rest is up to you.
