| Austria | Food for children Posted: Sun July 6, 2008 05:08 AM UTC
Hello , we are thinking of traveling to Austria and plan on staying for at least 6 weeks. We have 3 children ages 14, 9 and 8 and were wondering if the food would accommodate their ages. We would prefer good family dinners and not so much fast food. Meals that children would enjoy. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

They've got a lot of healthy food that tastes good. There will be no problem. I don't remember the concrete names of dishes, but waiters are usually very friendly and explain what is what. My children liked even soups. E.g. broth with noodles made of pancackes.

Hi,
if you would have let us known your wherabouts, it would have been a lot easier to reply to your questions! In general, Austria seems to be a rather civilised western country, and used to be kind of a source of the US- and western cultures. So rest assured, that your kids won't get food not accommodated to their ages! And fast-food is not the kind of food Austrians enjoy! You will be welcome and have a nice time here in Austria!

There's a chain of restaurants called Nordsee - which are basically fish - salads, hot meals and the dreaded fish and chips. They're reasonably priced and are in most cities in Germany & Austria
In Salzburg try Cafe Mozart which is in the main street - you have to go upstairs think its in Geiodstrasse = not sure of spelling of the road. You still have the usual fast food outlets - McDonalds, Burger King & Pizza Hut - or pick up a picnic from the supermarket

IMHO Nordsee is serving the dishes with a lot of Mayonaise and they are also a bit tricky when it comes to the extras !
most restaurants will have smaller portions for children and special dishes for them !

I like Nordsee too, the fish is excellent and there are steamed vegetables or salads and you can select what you like. The filled rolls were very good value too, I ate there heaps of times. While they specialise in seafoods, there are other alternatives.
In Vienna there is a self service Restaurant called Rosenberger, just off the pedestrian mall to your left as you enter. Go down to the basement, huge array of food and you help yourself.

You could also pick up muesli, milk, nits and bread and cheese;fruits and fresh veggies from a grocery store and use this for at least one meal of the day.The rest of the meals you could manage outside.
Hope this helps, Vpas

meats that taste like they have been soaked in lemon or cherry juice for several hours are popular in parts of germany and austria.
also learn what the words ground meat and ground beef look like in german. ground meat hamburger may not be a ground beef hamburger. also good to ask if order for hamburger includes the bread part, tomato and other common items used in the usa.

Hi,
I live here in Austria and also Germany for many years, but have never in my life heard about "meats that taste like having been soaked in lemon- or cherry-juice" and "are popular in Austria and Germany" ! Are you sure you are talking about Austria - maybe you mixed us up with Australia, we do NOT have kangaroos here !

maybe the lemon and cherry meats was a fad of the 70`ths and 80`ths. first had such meat at hotel in dinkelsbuhl germany then in a town on the bodensee. and then in vienna a few times.
sorry to hear you had never eaten such great tasting meats.

I was born in Germany in 1966, have lived here ever since, and... all I can think about is Sauerbraten, which is a tender beef roast marinated in spicy vinegar. Is it that? Yes, that's tasty. Often served with red cabbage. The Rhineland version is accompanied by a sauce with raisins. Come to think of it, I haven't had it for ages. Must have a word with Stepmother or Grandma. When I was little all I'd eat in restaurants was Schnitzel and chips - which is avaliable everywhere, usually also in kids' portion size. My favourite variety was Jägerschnitzel - the one with mushroom sauce.

there use to be a small guesthouse restraurant chain. seems name was weinerwahls or something simular. the lemom and cherry schnitzel was on the menu of many of them.
i recall now that when i was first there many people said that mainly only the poor people eat what most people would call germany or austrian food. the middle class eats french or italian type foods and the well to do eat chinesse or japanese. never did have a hard time finding good pizza places.
