Bourgogne French canals by barge
Posted: Sun July 6, 2008 02:54 AM UTC
I would like to do a trip by barge on one of the canals in France next year. Any suggestions on which canal and when to go? I'm also interested in information on walking tours in France.

Have been many times to France as it's only an hour by ferry from England but have yet to do a barging holiday. The following website shows some of the best places to go in France. Have to admit it has got me interested too. Darren.

I wonder if you are interested in a hotel barge holiday where you are a passenger in a 6 to 12 (or more)berth converted commercial barge (33metres by 5 metres) with skipper/crew/chef on board or are you talking about doing your own thing on a smaller hire boat (10 to 14 metres)??
Whatever you do, there are thousands of kilometers of navigable waterways in France Check out the map (which can be enlarged) at

a quick google will find much more on actual waterways and hiring boats and doing the big boat cruises. Check out my Burgundy page, if you wish, to read about doing it yourself. We did the trip Roanne to Paris via Nevers this May.
Happy cruise planning de p.

I did a few years ago a self steered trip in the Brittany canals and it was suęrb.
I know that the canal du Midi trips are very different but also superb.
Another area is the Burgundy canals with good food and beautiful old cities.
There are other areas in France. Each has its own character.
