| Leipzig | Travel from Franfurt to Leipzig Posted: Sun July 6, 2008 01:43 AM UTC
We are flying direct from Australia to Frankfurt(takes about 20 hours)and then need to go onto Leipzig immediately.
Is the train from Frankfurt to Leipzig a good option? Do the trainis leave from Frankfurt airport? thanks |

Yes, there is a train station at the airport (two, I think). And there are a number of trains from the airport that are direct to Leipzig (trip=3.5 hours).
Go to www.bahn.de (German rail website), click on English on the pull down menu on the upper right, then enter "Frankfurt(M)Flughaven" and "Leipzig" and a reasonable date and time. It looks like on weekdays, these direct trains leave almost hourly (note that not all trains are direct but may require a change). While we're on the subject, if you have a travel agent doing this, you might look into how much the add-on fare would be to fly from Frankfurt to Leipzig...sometimes the add-on fare on these long trips is not so much if you buy it all together...I am not crazy about flying within Europe, but since you're already at the airport, you might as well look into it... http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/i
will take you directly to the English pages. Put 'Frankfurt Flughafen' into the search box to get trains direct from the airport. Fare is 69 euro one-way, and you don't have to change on the majority of train times. Frankfurt is a massive airport, so allow plenty of time to get through baggage reclaim/to the station (it's within the same complex, you won't have to go outdoors) and to buy your ticket. There are machines, or you can get it from the ticket office (pleasant and helpful staff with good English). You can buy online but then you may then be tied to a particular train time; not, perhaps, a good idea in case of airport/flight delays. German trains are very comfortable, and at least you will be able to get up and walk around. I think I'd prefer the train journey to another flight.

You can visit the web site from the Frankfurt am Main airport at: www.airportcity-frankfurt.com. That will give you some familiarity with the layout, and location of the train station. You also may wish to look at the specific link: www.airportcity-frankfurt.com/cms/default/dok/71/7

I would consider buying the train tickets on the deutsche bahn website if you are able to get the "special" prices of E29, several seats are this price but sell fairly quickly. These special prices appear towards the right of the screen once you have selected trains. You are committed to using this train, when i flew over I booked a train for 2 1/2 hours after arrival and the savings are huge. I would recommend you reserve seats too at the same time. You print off your ticket(a piece of paper with a squiggly pattern on it) and need to present this and the credit card you used when the conductor comes around checking tickets.
The train station, not to be confused with public transport platforms, is well signed and in the basement of Terminal 1 As the others said put as departure frankfurt flughafen fernbahnhof, F,furt airport distance station, and destination as Leipzig hbf.
