| Alaska | after cruise land travel Posted: Sat July 5, 2008 09:51 PM UTC
This will be our first long awaited trip to Alaska. Our adventure starts with a 7 day northbound princess cruise on Aug 27,2008. We plan to travel by land for 4 days 3 nights beginning 9-3-08. Our return flight is out of Anchorage. Please suggest where to stay, what to do, etc. Also, all suggestions for the best excursions of port calls would be greatly appreciated. We love animals, however, are not much on walking.
Thanks!! |

I would suggest Denali Park north of Anchorage. Plan on spending a full day in the park. It's not open to private cars, so you have to book ahead of time for your seat on the bus.

Do you prefer scenery or wildlife?
Denali and the drive to Denali is less scenic, but you will see almost every famous Alaskan animal. Seward, Kenai, Homer and the drive is gorgeous, but you will probally only see mountain sheep and maybe some moose. You MUST take a bush plane tour, salmon fishing, and halibut fishing.

Our ports of call will be Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Sitka. We will end at Whittier.

You will be near Anchorage, you can go south to Seward ,and Kenia National Park.Seward is about 130 miles from Anchorage and Denali is about 250 miles.North to Denali National Park they have a Wildlife Tundra tour that takes you 34 miles into the park.I took this tour and seen grizzly bears ,eagles and moose and dall sheep(photos on my Alaska page). If you are renting a car get the windshield insurance,my got cracked the second day we were there and needed to be replaced.

Nice video of Denali park on your page. I think it would be best for Suzy to watch VT pages on each of the ports. There is a lot of information as to what to see/do in each port. Jeannette

A tour of a sled dog kennel may be good. That way you get to learn about dog sledding and enjoy a ride! Such kennels give visitors a real Alaska experience. Also whale watching/wild life boat tour may also be nice. That would not involve a lot of walking but still learn about our wildlife first hand. Just be sure to have a travel sickness patch or at lease ginger ale to prevent sea sickness. Have a great time!
