Aix-en-Provence A quiet location in Provence with a great view!

Has anyone experience of what we are looking for? A quiet, small gite, in or near a village - a fishing port would be nice - in the region of Provence?

I am an artist; partner likes to walk. Yes, we do sound boring but after a very busy year somewhere to relax, with a great view and a few pleasant places to eat are just what we want. We are aiming for late August, early September.

I have been so fortunate in the advice I have received on this site in past years - I am sure someone out there wil know just the place!

Near Aix with a great view? Hm . . . Lauris comes to mind. It's on the northern side of the Durance River and has spectacular views. On the southern side of the Durance is Roque d'Antheron which is a cute village but you'd have to get outside town for views. Lourmarin is very artsy but it is also a tourist mecca so rather more expensive. Rognes is lovely but quite off the beaten track.

Have you considered something nearer Arles? Fontevielle is lovely or you could look for something near the Abbey of Montmajour for great views.

St. Remy is a larger town with all the shopping you need for groceries, etc. and still lovely and the surrounding area is unbelieveable. You have Les Baux, Glanum and the Alpilles . . . lots to paint! It's probably our favorite area of Provence.

Have you checked the Gites de France web site? They often include photos and information about the surrounding areas. http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites

If you want a small town, lots to do, fishing port and great views, head west to Collioure near Perpignan. It's a long way from Aix-en-Provence but it is stunning. There is great walking nearby and it has a train station. Type it into the VT Search Window above and check the photos and Tips.

Good luck and enjoy your year.
