| Santiago | Only One Evening in Santiago - What to Do? Where to Stay? Posted: Sat July 5, 2008 01:31 PM UTC
Hi everyone,
We are a family of 5 who unfortunately will only have 1 evening to spend seeing Santiago. We arrive by air from Easter Island at 6:30pm and have to fly out again the next morning at 9:45am. This is our first time to Santiago (although we hope to return to see it properly someday) for all of us. Could anyone recommend some things to see and places to stay reasonably close to the airport? Thankyou! Amy |

Just about anywhere in the city is easily accessible in half an hour or so but you might have to add on some time if arriving on a weekday and dealing with rush hour. You wouldn't get to your hotel before 8 pm. There is a hotel in the airport and one 5 minutes away. I really don't see that you will have time for more than dinner, given your arrival and departure times.

We stayed in Santiago last Nov, for our first night and our last night (before a morning departure). We stayed at the Radisson (downtown), primarily because we could all be accomodate (there were 14 in our group) and we got a very good rate off their website. We are going back again this Oct/Nov (this time only my wife and myself) and will be staying at the Orly Hotel. It is a "boutique" hotel that has received a lot of good reviews and is reasonably priced. There may be hotels near the airport....but I think it would be more interesting and better restaurants if you stayed downtown. If you stay at a downtown hotel, make sure you reserve a taxi, minivan large enough to accomodate all of you and your luggage. Allow adequate time for traffic and airport check-in requirements.
Re: restaurants.....we ate at Astrid & Gaston....all 14 of us agreed it was great.....although like any big city, Santiago has no lack of restaurants. Buena Suerte,

You might find it more convenient to stay at the Holiday Inn at the airport. From there it would be easy to take a taxi to downtown. It would already be quite late so maybe leave a visit for another trip.
