My husband and I are looking for suggestions for an inexpensive trip during the 2nd half of September. We know that it will be off season for Croatia, and that is one option. We would welcome any suggestions.
Thanks, Barbara |

Hello Barbara,
By mid September, on our last trip to Dubrovnik, it was humid and beginning to be threatened by heavy rain and thunderstorms. It did not stop us from having a most enjoyable holiday - we were self catering, had a hire car for only a few days and walked a lot. It was fantastic. You do not indicate what you mean by "inexpensive" or whether you will be s/c or hotel based. The eurozone countries are expensive against both the £ and the $ - easing up a tiny little this week. Can you help by giving a bit more information about your interests, other places you would like to visit etc? Last mid-October we had a great holiday in Normandy (Grandcamp les Bains), the weather was excellent and there was a lot there to interest us - the Landings beaches, small villages, restaurants etc. If you could be a bit more specific about your interests and budget I'm sure more relevant replies would follow, Best wishes Barbara - in Wales.

Thank you for responding Ranger. I think that we are just looking for a get-away, something with some history, culture, different from our home (USA). We are not interested in a hostel or a luxury hotel, just something comfortable, maybe even a rented place instead of a hotel. Thank you for suggesting Normandy, we hadn't thought of it. Did you do a tour in Croatia? My husband and I are living in separate countries due to our current work situation, and this trip will be our first time together since early June. We want to explore a different part of the world, but we need time alone without a tour group as well.

Hello again
- no we travelled independently to Dubrovnik - as we almost always do - and for any trip of more than 3/4 days we prefer to be self catering. Last October's Normandy trip, when we stayed at Grandcamp les Bains (now known as Grandcamp -Maisy) was full of history - not only the WW2 Landings Beaches but Bayeux, the Cathedral and Tapestry, and the history of the small towns and villages of the area. For a short trip I would also recommend Gent or Bruges in Belgium, not too big - lots to see and do in an easy going atmosphere. On the whole we have had our fill of big cities and prefer to be based in smaller, towns. Collioure in Languedoc Rousillon is one of our favourite places to relax in but still have plenty to do and the weather in September should be very pleasant. You can see the places I have mentioned on my travel pages but if I can help please ask some more. Bedtime here now in Wales! Barbara.

Krakw is lovely and well worth visiting.
You might consider Slovenia too;wonderful scenery, lots of interest, excellent food & wine & beer. If you have a car exploring the wine-roads in the eastern part would be super in September (and you could easily go over the border into Croatia). Many of the 'tourist farms' offer superb accommodation and food. Have a look at www.slovenia.info Wine-road pages here: http://www.slovenia.info/?kulinarika_in_vino=0&
