Hopefully a VT Vienna expert will reply with specific suggestions. In the meantime do look at the "Things to Do" and "Off the Beaten Track" Tips on the Vienna Travel Page you might find just the sort of thing you would like to see.

There are of course plenty of "unusual" aspects to Vienna, things to see and do which you won't find in the ordinary guidebooks, BUT: Without any clue of what you are after, like ranger49 asked; Accommodation? Transport? Restaurants? Night Life? Things to Do? Places to Go? and what your interests are, it is hard to help, honestly. Some people like doorknobs, some people like tombstones, some people like parks, some people like cafes. I'd love to help, but I need at least a clue or two.

Ideally you should find hints and tips on Off the beaten path pages. However, I took a look at the pages (quite many of them), and it seems like a disappointingly large amount are not at all Off the beaten path, quite the contrary (such as the Strauss statue in Stadtpark - which is on the front page of many Vienna maps and guidebooks!).

My best advice is to buy a book called "Only in Vienna" by Duncan J.D. Smith. You'll find it in some bookstores in Vienna, for example Thalia in Mariahilferstrasse (near Zieglergasse underground station) and the bookshop in Museumsquartier.

I forgot something really important ... please be aware that at the end of august the weather is very capricious! Make plans for in- and outside.

Hi!

As I am a bit unsure, what you all really like,so here are some suggestions:

1) We do have a lot of legends, it would be nice to combine the walking tour through the city with some of them:
Read some of these ... ;)
http://englishandcroatian.blogspot.com/2007/03/vienna-legends.html
http://vienna.metblogs.com/category/the-top-25-vienna-legends/
http://vienna.metblogs.com/category/history/

2) For something reallyreally different take a "Third man tour", they walk with you to the scene under vienna where the film was made ;) Therefore you go through the old canalization of vienna with flames (torches) and a bagpipe (to avoid meeting rats ;)) ... in early days our homeless people does it, but now its a professional ... http://www.viennawalks.com/pages/engl/nav/rahmen2.php?frame=3mann

3) Or get a very nice view of Vienna:
by going to "Kahlenberg" or "Cobenzl" one of our nearest hills (you can reach them by public buses).
On "Riesenrad" i "Prater" or on "Donauturm" you can also see Vienna from above.

5) And for all the music lovers of you ;) In front of "Rathaus" they make a filmfestival until 31th of august where a lot of operas are shown - every day at sunset ... and it's for free ;) http://www.wien-event.at/stadtWienEvents/eventProgramm.cmi?cmi.eventId=6566#step_1

so. i hope this helps you a bit ... have a nice trip!
