| Andalucía | Day excursions from Marbella Posted: Thu July 3, 2008 11:13 PM UTC
I am currently in Marbella and have no plans for the next 2 days, I already browsed through the website and saw that visiting Ronda and Gibraltar are high on the recommendations list. Given that it's July now, are there any other locations more worth visiting these days? I already went to AL-Hambra.
I have a rental car, is it advisable for me to drive to Ronda and Gibraltar? (I have a GPS device). If not, how shall I go there? |

Not sure if you like wolves or not ( that's the animal , not the English football team ) . If so Lobo Park www.lobopark.com is well worth a visit. It's based near Antequera so not far from where you are. Personally i loved it there. Yes i would drive to Gibraltar . It's so easy from Marbella & only takes about an hour. Expect to queue for at least an hour to exit Gibraltar though as customs usually check about 1 in 3 vehicles. Ronda also take the car if you want to go. The scenery is nice but i didn't take a lot else from the town.

The trip to Ronda can be combine as a round trip visiting one of the white cities. There are several depending on what rout you take, and how long you want to drive. You'll find good suggestions here on VT.
As to Gibraltar, yes, but park on the Spanish side. There is a good bus service inside the border that takes you anywhere you want to go. There is no sense spending half a day in line in your car. Just keep in the left-hand lane, and turn left your first chance past the check point. There are a few parking garages in there, ans only a short walk to the border.

The driving is alright up to Ronda. Just bendy and winding road. you can get some nice distant views of Gibraltar and north Africa on a clear day. Ronda old part is worth visiting. That's the original city built by the moors. There is a nice but small restored 'palace' called MONDRAGON which has a unique garden and with views over the edge of the cliff. Abb el Malik son of Abul Hassan, sultan of Morocco, Emperor of Fez, presided over what was, at least in Moorish eyes, Ronda's golden agein the early 1300s .
You can find some Arab baths but it takes a walk to explore.

Just a little advise, do not drive into Gibraltar with your car during this month (July). The Policia Nacional at the frontier are having selective industrial action and there are massive queues on some days, I think its every Tuesday and Thursday of July!
