There is a day pass for train, bus, tram and metro, but not boat travel. It is called ov-dagkaart and it costs 46,70 euros when travelling second class (that is the standard level in Holland). Available on trainstations.
About the best way to travel: it depends what you want to do and where you want to go. Public transport is adequate in Holland, a car gets you anywhere, a bike is great for limited distances and in cities. The best Island to visit: what do you want to do and see, do you want an island with few cars, do you need a lot of nightlife, or are you there only for the sheep? You really want to give some more information if you want to be guided here, or do some research yourself, there is a lot of info on the net. here are two links: http://www.wadden.nl/index&lng=en http://islas.ruudbijlsma.nl/intro_en.htm

See this site for public transport http://www.9292ov.nl/
It includes prices etc, so you can see if it is cheaper to buy separate tickets, depending on how much you'll travel. Member ATLC had a useful translation of this site that unfortunately still is Dutch only: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1aa687/ The site for trains is in English: www.ns.nl This might be of use as well: http://www.vbn-bv.nl/ovinfo/ Cheers Dennis
