Adelaide Wine Tour
Posted: Thu July 3, 2008 04:24 PM UTC
Hello, my husband and I will be in Adelaide for five days, three of which will be spent on Kangaroo Island.

We know this area of Australia is world famous for its wines and would like to do a tour. Does anyone have any suggestions? We thought about hiring a car, but the mixing of wine tasting and driving is likely not a good idea. We tend to shy away from large bus tours if this is possible.

Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice you can give!

Hiring a car would be an option, perhaps you could be the nominated driver as 2 standard drinks will put you at the limit, but there are day trips by bus to the Barossa Valley and that would mean you can both drink to your hearts, content. There is also the Clare valley which is a pretty drive from Adelaide and also McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide. There used to be a train to the Barossa but not any more so the bus trip or hiring a car are really your only options. If you decide on the bus trip to the Barossa I think the one which stops at Chateau Yaldara for lunch is the better one to do.

Don't drive. A group of us did a Barossa/Clare Valley Tour last year which we organised ourselves but at a couple of wineries we noticed a minibus from "Barossa Wine Lovers Tours". I'm sure there would be other companies doing the same thing.
Have fun de p.

there are many different companies for winery tours...
for a cheaper alternative, try the groovy grape tour. they do day trips and you can sample to your hearts content!
for the more expensive day out, try one of the many limo trips that are available..
have fun, and dont forget to drink water as well!

Go to the McLaren vale area, about 90 mins south of Adelaide, hire a car and stay the night.
Get a good map, drive from Adelaide, do Wirra Wirra,Chapel Hill and somewhere else ( sorry, drinking some S Aust shiraz as I type )oh, Pirra Mimma perhaps, great olives, then book into accomodation for the night. This is around 12 noon or 1pm. Take a walk to 2 or 3 other wineries. If you stay in McLaren Vale you can visit Hardies, Maxwells and somewhere else and have a great dinner at The Barn.
Check out next morning, visit a couple more, for the typical and gorgeous view of McLaren Vale you MUST see D'Arenburg and Coriole, Actually, do them the other way round and have lunch at D'Arenburg and then head back to Adelaide.
Raise a glass to me for suggesting a great itinery.

Al, forgot to say that if you just have a few samples at each winery you'll be fine to drive. Keep to the left!!
