Estonia Flights from Tallinn and historical attractions...
Posted: Thu July 3, 2008 03:02 PM UTC
Hello all
I'm planning to visit Estonia via the ferry from Helsinki. My questions are the following;
Will 2 days suffice to see all the attractions of the city?
Also, what attractions of military or historical value are possible to see in the city? I understand the monument to the unknown Soviet soldier has been moved from the city centre. Is it possible to see it in it's new location?
Any historical or military museums? Other memorials of sorts? I'm interested in any which are in Estonia in general too, not just in Tallinn.
I understand Estonia Air fly to Dublin, does anyone know any low budget airlines which fly to Dublin...
I'm keen to see areas of Tallinn&Estonia which are off the tourist trail so i don't mind if the airport is a little out of the way :)
Many thanks in advance for your responses

DG

Ryanair are no good to me here i'm afraid. I don't want to make any stopovers either.
I've just checked out SAS airlines and the prices are a bit too much for my pocket

Any thoughts anyone?

If you mean Tallinn 2 days is enough, historic old city in Tallinn is very small. You will need to see Down town and Upper town. Try to have an excursion with a monk to Domenican Cathidral, see Katarina kaik - the oldest part of Tallinn and reserve a table in midieval retaurant (Peppersack or Olde Hansa)

I understand the monument to the unknown Soviet soldier has been moved from the city centre. Is it possible to see it in it's new location?

It is near military graves now,Filtri teae. I am not sure perhaps it is still guarded.

Any historical or military museums?

Well there is no much museums in Tallinn, you can see Rathouse (it is open by summers), small Sea museum in Fat Margarita Turn (Tower), children marzipan museum, house of Peter the Great (Russin king), maybe the most interesting - Kin-in-de-Kek (Look-in-the Kitcken)- it is historic museum in the tower and old system of underpasses. Also you can visit Kadriorg palace (dont expect to see much art there, mostly furniture, grafics, not famous sculptures..) You also can visit Gilds Houses, go to the country to see Rocca al Mare - it is midcentury village.
Small Military museum has poor collection of exhibits from 1939-1991, it does not say about fashists soldiers who was in Tallinn, but it is mostly about Soviet army taking into consideration the official opinion of Est Government... not very objective.

Other memorials of sorts?

No memorials

I'm interested in any which are in Estonia in general too, not just in Tallinn.

You can see Tarta, Pirita

If you want to see many museums you can buy Tallinn card, it is advisable to find the hotel in the center, prices are good and it is very comfortable, becouse outside the old city - modern grey part.. and it wont give you atmosphere of old Tallinn. If you are interested I can give you some nice hotels where I usually stay and some cafes to eat.

Nice work EllieEllie many thanks!
I like a lot of the stuff you mentioned.
Can you give me the address of the military cemetry and the military museum which you mentioned?
I'd be very interested to hear about good restaurants too thanks! I'm more into pubs than coffee houses myself so if you know good one's it would be great :)
Thanks for all your help!
Do you know what Narva is like? I'm considering a trip for a day to either Narva or Parnu. I like the idea of being able to look across the water at Russia if i go to Narva though :)
Cheers again!

Air baltic goes to both Tallinn and Dublin. You might also try FLYLAL as I think they go to Tallin also and I know for sure to Dublin via Vinius.
