please can somebody help me with a question. how much roughly does a meal for two average? also, how much money should i take for a weeks holiday, not including car hire? i have never been to madeira before and i am planning a trip for the end of september, any ideas on weather that time of the year also please. thank you

I was in Madeira 4 years ago, and I went with my parents who paid everything, so I didn't bother too much looking at the prices ;) But I remember it was pretty much the same as in Portugal. It may be a little more expensive, but not too much - though it may have changed in these past 4 years.

I'd say a meal for two, in an average restaurant would cost you around 30€, 35€, though I remember that in the little villages it cost less.

About how much money you should take... That depends on how much you want to buy! There are not many museums in Madeira (I didn't go to any), and nature's free to watch :) So basically you will spend your money on souvenirs, meals, petrol, and that's pretty much it. Surely less expensive than the UK.

But maybe someone who was there more recently could give you exact prices.

Although Madeira is more expensive than mainland, there are many restaurants in Funchal away from the centre where dish of the day can be less than €5. In the Lido area you can get tourist menu for around €12. I find toiletries a bit more expensive so tend to stock up when in UK, but many things are around the same or cheaper. Don't use travellers cheques but there are some places to exchange currency, commission free but I believe that M & S and the Post Office in UK have good rates at the moment. There are also lots of ATM machines where you can draw cash. Weather good temps, may be a bit showery but very warm, will just start to be chilly in evenings.

Hi there, Madeira is expensive but if you want to go for the cheaper side, you can cough up around 30 euros for a supper for 2 (that includes wine) and lunch will set you back at +- 10euros if you go to the little shops and have a prego (portuguese breadroll with steak, lettuce, cheese and ham) with a drink. You dont have to go to the larny resturants to eat well. There is also a lot of hotels that is not so pricey, espectially in the South side of the island.
September is a very nice time of the year to visit Madeira. It is still summer and the beaches is packed. there is also still festivities right around the island from beginning August till end September.
