| Peru | Cell Phone Rentals in Peru Posted: Thu July 3, 2008 01:22 PM UTC
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Peru in the fall and want info on renting a cell phone. Any company recommendations? Is it better to rent in the States or wait til I get down there? Any other tips? Thanks so much! |

It's cheap to buy a budget phone so I would recommend that. If you are in the States and you use AT&T or T-Mobile then your cell phone uses a SIM chip, which means you can call the company and ask them to unlock your phone, allowing you to use other companies' SIM cards with your phone. I have used the same cheap quad-band GSM phone that I bought in the U.S. years ago (and then had unlocked) in various countries… the States, Mexico, Bolivia, and Chile.

You could either get your GSM phone unlocked and buy a SIM card when you get here or just rent a phone at the airport, i believe it´s very cheap. YOu can get either one from Telefonica company, they have associates at the baggage claim area at the Lima airport.

As Andrea mentions, there are lots of opportunities to rent one at the airport, at least in the Lima airport. There are many people offering this service outside customs.

Hi,
Thanks for your answer! I do have one more question. If I use my own phone from the USA will I need to bring an adaptor or converter to charge it?

You should be able to charge your USA cell phone without an adapter or convertor. Most cell phone chargers are dual voltage to begin with and the plug type in Peru is the same as in the US. If your charger is not dual voltage be sure to watch what outlet you plug it into. There are places in Peru that have both 120 and 220 electricity. I burned out a water heating coil when I put it into the wrong socket. Just look on the back of your charger and it should tell you what voltage it is designed for.
