Sogn og Fjordane Bus or Train from Flam to Bergen
Posted: Thu July 3, 2008 10:20 AM UTC
Which is the better way to travel between Flam and Bergen - bus or train? I have read about the bus between Gudvangen and Voss which goes via Stalheim, takes the famous super-steep Old Stalheim Road, which is worth seeing. Would it be better to take the bus from Flam to Voss and then use the train to Bergen (this is the route that the Norway in a Nutshell trip takes?

No, the Bergen train goes on from Voss to Myrdal. Then you take the famous Flåm train down to Flåm. From Flåm you take the fjordboat to Gudvangen, and then the bus up to Voss and return by train to Bergen. That is at least how most do the nutshell. But one can change it about as one pleases as it all is run by public transportation.
But the two highlights is taking the train down to Flåm from Myrdal, and then the boat trip in the fjord to Gudvangen. The fjord is one of UNESCO's world heritage sites.
Have a great trip and greetings from Bergen
:-)

Sorry, forgot the Stalheim road. Yes, you get to ride that with the bus from Gudvangen to Voss. But it's only open during the summer months

How do you travel TO Flåm? If you go by train, you might want to take the bus (or boat) to Bergen? Personally, I think the Flåm railway is more interesting than the Stalheim road... but both are definitely worth doing! ;o)

Yet another option would be the express boat Flåm - Bergen (summer only), see fjord1.no for info.

Sorry missed an important point. We are taking the train from Oslo to Flam and heading to Bergen. So in effect it is the Norway in a Nutshell route in one direction. We looked at the express boat to Bergen but we thought we may see more of the countryside from the bus or train (although there lots of tunnels I understand). We will definitely be doing the Flam to Gudvagen boat trip.

We are staying in Flam for a couple of nights. We were also wondering about doing the Gudvagen to Laerdral boat trip and returning to Flam by bus, but not sure if it is worth doing or not. We have limited time and would like to see Laerdal, Borgund Stave Church, and a few of the other little towns a long the way. We might hire a car in Flam for the day and drive around to these places and that way we will see some of the countryside as well. I am in touch with a company that will rent us a car for the day. We are also going to spend half a day kayaking the Old Kings Path from Flam.

Would love to know your thoughts.

Ah, the advice still stands. You get off the Oslo-Bergen train at Myrdal, and take the "Flåm-banen" (train) down to Flåm. After you have done your couple of days in Flåm (Good idea seeing the stave church), you end it by taking the boat from Flåm to Gudvangen, bus up to Voss (over Stalheim), then train from Voss to Bergen.
The Flåm train is actually Norway's no.1 attraction, and a friend of mine is one of the drivers during the summer....
(Driving from Flåm to Lærdal, you drive through one of the worlds longest road tunnels)

This area is beautiful and one of my favourite places in Norway. I would recommend renting a car - that way can easily get to lovely Undredal and the tiny little stave church there, and you could also drive the old road across the mountain (only open in summer) between Aurland and Lærdal - VERY highly recommended!! (You can drive through the Lærdal tunnel on your way back) A quite spectacular viewpoint was recently built by the old road, and from there you'll have amazing views of the Aurland fjord (there's some info on my Sogn og Fjordane page, under "transportation")

Lærdal is very nice, and so is Borgund stave church - both places are definitely worth visiting.
